I haven’t figured out how to get the rear hatch to close and lock (button on back of rear hatch). The close button works, but the one that also locks just beeps at me. I’ve tried stepping away
What’s the trick?

Do you have the digital key on your phone? If so, it could think your phone is actually in your car so it won't lock the doors. I ended up taking the thing off my phone because it was a bigger PITA than useful, even when adjusting the sensitivity. Plus I don't like not being able to use Dev options on my phone.

If you don't, make sure your foot is not in the area of the kick sensor under the bumper when pressing the button as well.

The FOB has to be with you and fairly close for the close & lock feature to work. With it in my pocket I usually get my leg close (if not touching the bumper) when I press the button and I don’t move back until it starts to close. Once initiated you can walk away and the multiple beeps will reassure you that it’s locked.

I’m assuming this is so 4R knows the key is with you and not in the vehicle.

yes the 4runner is littered with proximity sensors and if it sniffs a keyfob it knows exactly where it is in 3D space inside and outside the vehicle, and it tries hard to not lock you out

I've had some oddities with the hatch beeping at me too after pressing the "close and lock" button. I've guessed it is the vehicle thinking the key is inside the car. If I stand too close to the hatch, I get the beep and no close. I can pretty reliably get the hatch to close if I stand arms-length back from the hatch (where my body isn't under the hatch).

I believe the button with the lock on it can also be used to control how far the hatch opens.
When I was messing with it as you did the hatch ended up only opening maybe 75% of full.
Somewhere in the manual I found the usual 4runner machinations to reset to factory.
Steps are Long lost to history.

I've finally gotten this function to work reliably for me.... after a bit of experimenting. It would seem my method is not the same as others, however.
With fob in my pocket (where it ALWAYS is), standing under the open tailgate about even with the back of it (would hit my head coming down). Press the shut and lock button. Wait for two beeps. Step quickly away to the back with the second beep - far enough so the system KNOWS the fob is not in the vehicle. (last week I tried walking past the truck on one side and the close sequence stopped.)
I still can only get the open and close foot sensor to work some of the time but I'm now close to 100% with the close and lock button:>)
