Trailhunter - wheel vibration

Hmm, what makes you think I didn't take it to the dealer?! They replaced 2 tires, marginal improvement. They cracked my windshield during test drive but they replaced it, foc of course. Toyota said that vibration was normal and wouldn't do anything more and to contact Toyo as they warranty the tires , not Toyota. I called Toyo and they paid the majority of the cost to get new tires, which fixed my problem. I paid very little for the new tires, now I have retail spec, not the oem spec tires that has minimal tread and I have lifetime rotation and balancing. My headache is gone. If someone wants to continue to waste their time taking it back to the dealer, you will need a dealer who will cooperate, which all wont.
I am very pleased with the results and that is all I care about. Am I worried about spending a couple of hundred dollars - not at all - to get LT tires. Sorry if you dont like my approach...

tried the dealer i bought the defender ltx ms2 twice to balance the new tires from the oem grandtrek pt5a. still had a slight vibration at 75+, took it back in and they supposedly rebalanced.

checked tires 40 psi

drove 75+ vibration was worse.

going to toyota dealer today to see if the tire dealer are just bad at balancing or if its the tires (i should have known something was off since the parking lot is no longer packed like it usually has been before the name change)

but i saved $300 vs discount tire pricing

ISSUE RESOLVED - for me anyhow.
I just came back from Discount Tire where I replaced the oem tires with Toyo OpenCountry AT3 (sl load) and got it up to 75 mph and had no vibration whatsoever. My issue is resolved and case closed...

Once the 500-mile tire break-in period is complete, the tires may behave a little differently.

It's been a few months since your installation. Could you share your experience with the vibration? Has it improved, stayed the same, or gotten worse?

Vibration is completely gone. Just drove 3000 miles to Canada, and still perfect.

OEM open country AT3 are horrible and are known to cause vibration. They are completely spec’d different. The same open country At3 SL purchased at tire stores are superior and fixes the vibration.
also the Pro’s and trailhunters have been sitting for months on quality holds and develop flat spots that accentuate vibrations and sometimes do get better with use.

I agree that the OE Open Country A/T III is an OE-specific tire and shouldn't automatically be treated as identical to the retail A/T III. But I think you're going a little farther than the evidence supports by saying the OE tires are “known to cause vibration” and that replacing them with the retail version fixes it. There are certainly individual owners who have eliminated a vibration by replacing the OE tires, but there are also plenty of Pro/Trailhunter owners running the factory Toyos without vibration.

Same with the quality holds. Some Pros and Trailhunters were held, particularly among earlier production, but that doesn't establish that every vehicle exhibiting vibration sat long enough to develop flat spots, or that flat spotting is the common cause. If a particular truck was stored for months and the vibration diminishes as the tires warm/use accumulates, that's a reasonable hypothesis. Otherwise I'd still want to characterize the vibration and road-force the actual tires before assigning the cause.

I'm not defending the OE tires as equivalent to the retail AT3—they aren't necessarily the same specification. I just don't think “OE AT3s are horrible and cause vibration” has been established.

from what i remember most toyota oem tires are only rated for about 20-35k (depending on model) miles vs retail where they are usually 55k rated on SL tires

I didn't know before delivery, but looking at the OE OC AT3 on my Trailhunter, it's very clear the tread isn't as deep as a regular tire. Hopefully, they'll get me through this winter. I'll evaluate them and get the Nokian Outpost nAT if they don't perform.

i think oem tires are still 10 or 11/32 in tread depth but the compound just doesnt have durability it seems to last your typical retail lifespan.

i remember back in the 80/90s i got a set of oem's to 45k but i have never had a set in the last 20-25 years make it past 25k miles safely (at least for ND winters to be of any use)
