They can move to any of the spots on the rails that have the holes.
I removed mine after 1500 miles bc the wind noise was obnoxious. Super easy to get on and off, so no reason to put up with that added drag and noise unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Wow. That made a HUGE difference. Lip pointing to the front is definitely the correct way for wind noise. While there is still some noise around 70ish it's nowhere near as bad. If wind noise is a problem, I'd highly recommend checking the orientation of the lip. Thanks to @Tarekith for the suggestion.
Oh good, glad that worked for you. I was wondering if that was the main culprit, saw so many people upset with the noise they made and I could barely hear anything :)

I actually added the crossbars, more because I like the look. Not as much for any functionality. I haven't noticed any extra noise, but to be fair I live in Florida where it is hell hot and I rarely have my windows down or sunroof open. I'm sure I'd hear more noise with the sunroof open, but there's only about 9 days a year down here where I'd actually have my sunroof open.

I'm sorry - which side are we calling the lip?

Unfortunately I still think they make a lot of wind noise even when installed lip pointing to front...and even when the windows/moon roof are closed.

I can help you on this one. I recently put the OEM cross bars on and wanted to make sure they were on like they are supposed to be from the factory.

Pretend that you are standing on a ladder at the back of your 4Runner looking forward to the front of the 4Runner. Yes, the cross bar that is labeled 'FRONT' would be farthest away from you as you are standing on your ladder at the back of your vehicle.

Now, to really answer your question...as you are standing on your ladder at the back of your car looking forward you should be able to normally read from left to right the exclamation point in the triangle warning that says 'See user manual for load capacity' on both of the rails as if you were reading a book.

If the warning label is upside down and you can't read it normally from left to right from standing at the back of your vehicle, then they are not assembled how they are at the factory.

Hope that helps although I don't really think it's a big difference either way.

The crossbars have one side that is smooth and round. The other is more angled and has a “lip” or spoiler at the top. Wind noise went down for me when I faced this spoiler or lip side towards the front of the car. I took mine on a quick drive to test it out. I did think that this way was quieter, although not as quiet as it was before having anything on there, but I figured that should be expected.
