Awesome.... Maybe I misread the Toyota manual. It clearly showed how to start the procedure but never said anything about the automagical capability :)

So, the dealer was right and there is nothing they need to do with TPWS on a rotation.

Put that one to bed and maybe trust the dealer a little more.

This is my experience. I have a second set of winter wheels with new never used Toyota TPMS. I used the settings to indicate that I installed the second wheel set (you can ‘register’ two wheels sets).

After I installed the second set of wheels, I received the same message you did – something like “wheel location setting while driving”. After two 10 mile trips, the truck figured out the location of the individual wheels/TPMS and the light went out and the correct pressures indicated. Magic!

So yes, the TPMS magically knows what is where!
because it knows where it isnt :)

ugh my bad, i think i derailed the whole convo. i was thinking you rotated the spare in 🤦‍♂️
I'm curious. I have a full-size spare on my Outback that I've been rotating in since day one since it is an all-wheel drive vehicle. Are y'all doing the same for your 4Runners with a full-size to keep it close just in case?

Not all, but I am.

I’ve lost multiple tires to shredded sidewall on the trail, and in that case I continued to use 4 tires with similar thread left until either worn out or I lost another tire. I have an unmounted spare for my 4th gen that I turn into my spare when that happens.

Also ensures my spare is as fresh as the other tires and gives me more time before I have to replace worn out tires. Unless I damage another tire beyond repair, that is :)

That makes perfect sense and I imagine I'll be doing the same when I pick one up. Thanks for the reply.

The manual specifies that tires should not be moved from left to right during rotation to preserve direction. For 5 wheel rotation they suggest LF<->LR and RR->RF->SP->RR order. This means that the left side tires are always in use. This kind of defeats the purpose of extending life by including the spare in the rotation, as the left side tires will always wear faster. Does it even make sense to include the spare in the rotation at all?

Also, they note: Do not fail to initialize the TPWS after rotation.

I do a rotation that includes rotating between sides. My tires are not directional, as far as I know none of the tires that come standard on any trim are directional.

spare -> front passenger
front passenger-> rear passenger
rear passenger-> front driver
front driver -> rear driver
rear driver -> spare

Not claiming this is the “correct” way, but this is what I’m sticking with. Consistency matters.

i dont, i havent used the spare since i dont know when. never had an emergency where i needed to use a spare to get to a tire repair place in like 20+ years.

but then again i dont run my tires down past the wear bars. winters here are not kind to low tread depth tires.

i mean we only have about 3 yrs on our 23 tundra goodyear duratracs (18k miles) and we are looking to replace them with defender ltx ms2.

they kinda suck for winters now.

Something to be said for keeping good rubber between you and the ground. I usually replace factory stuff with something from Discount Tire. Swapped the Yokohama Geolanders that came on my Outback with some Falken Wildpeak AT3W. They've been great. Also always get the replacement coupons from Discount and do the rotations every 5000 miles. Been lucky so far, knocking on wood.

so in other words, they removed 1 sensor from a tire and put it into the spare tire that was rotated in.

on the higher trims of the 4runner all 5 tires have sensors. the lower trims only show 4 sensors

as you can see from the dash on my platinum

2025 4Runner MID screen PSI.webp
My lowly Limited only shows the 4. I even got a 5th 20" Limited wheel and an OEM TPMS sensor to replace the steely with an identical wheel/tire. I ran the "register a new tpms sensor" instructions from the manual and still only show the 4.

Is the platinum spare an identical spare? I guess that's the difference. There must be a missing sensor on the vehicle side to detect the spare TPMS sensor in the trims that come with a gimped spare.

Guess I'll have to run that every time I do a 5 wheel rotation. Very strange. My mother's low-trim 2013 Rav4 2WD has TPMS in the spare.

i think its just a QoL issue with the platinum and having a full size spare.

its just some of the perks of having a platinum you cant get in any other trim (hud, blue seats, ambient lighting btw is meh)

didnt realize that showing the 5th wheel psi was another feature exclusive to the platinum

My TH has this feature, as does the TRDP.
thats weird, i would think if they are not exclusive to the platinum, why wouldnt the limited have this also?

i mean the limited is just a non hv version of the platinum/TH/TRD pro???

unless its exclusive to the top trims

Does the Limited come with a full sized spare and matching wheel? That might be the deciding factor.
