so I’m trying to decide what trim levels of the sixth GEN to get. I’ve test driven off-road premium that seems pretty pretty dang nice. My my thought is probably 90-95% of my time will be spent on tarmac with an occasional spirited cornering and the other few percent off-road not that I am crazy about rock crawling but I would like to have the option of going l Overlanding as I get into my retirement years. So a question I have is on my understanding is the sport premium is geared more for on road whereas the off-road premium is more off-road capable a question I have is will the sport premium not be very capable off-road at all, would I be hindering over landing efforts if I went with the sport premium?

Any 4wd trim of any 4runner is incredibly capable from factory. Take off the air dam, and get an AT tire, and bam it's no longer street-oriented, it's off-road oriented.

Yep, the off-road trim makes off roading easier but the other 4x4 trims are all equipped to handle off road. Basically has a lot of nice to have off road features out of the box.

The On-Road Reality
It is easy to assume the Off-Road Premium will handle poorly on the pavement, but that is a misconception. Because the taller tires and Bilstein shocks absorb potholes and speed bumps so efficiently, the Off-Road Premium actually offers a much more comfortable daily commute than the stiffer Sport Premium. You might lose a tiny fraction of cornering sharpness, but you gain a vehicle that is fully ready for any retirement adventure right off the dealership lot.

My two cents - yes they are all capable but I have a TRD ORP and its pretty rough on the repeating pattern of concrete pavement here in Colorado. BUT, it's those dang 50% factory Falken Wildpeaks - they're not the real deal - the tread pattern isnt even close to the "real" Wildpeaks you'd buy aftermarket. My experience is that the Wildpeaks (C-load rated) are WAY better on road and off with that little extra sidewalk flex. I went with 285-70-18's, giving me nearly 34" tires and nearly 12" wide. Overall a little larger on the factory TRD wheels, no rub, and very nice on road. It was always great off-road and now its even better.

Plus the Off-Road Premium gives you the obnoxiously larger screen, trail cameras, and rear locker, all nice features when off-roading. The stereo system isnt much to brag about - it's just fine for people like me (on the verge of retirement myself) who just like my classic rock and some country, not a heavy bass enthusiast.

I went in wanting the ORP after a couple months of research. Seemed a nice line between something capable "enough" and nice options. My use was mostly commuting but I wanted the option to go off-the-road, logging and fire roads, maybe one or two nights out. Any of the 4Runners can do this, the question is what type of vehicle you want to live with the other 98 or 99% of the time when you're not on the trail. A sporty on-road vehicle with off-road capability (Sport Premium) or an equipped off-road oriented vehicle that will be tame on the road also (Off Road Premium). There is also the body differences to consider. This is simplistic, but basically the trade off. The ORP is very compelling to me.

After closely going over the options I wanted, it became easier to get a Trailhunter which included all of the options I wanted as standard equipment.
