I thought it might be placebo, but after a year of driving this truck and probably using sport mode 10 times, I finally looked it up. Apparently putting it into sport mode tightens the electronic power steering. Pretty cool feature I haven't seen discussed on here yet! I might use it more often even though I am only getting 17 mpg in normal mode šŸ™ƒ

put it in tow mode. absolutely rips off the line with
fast transmission gear selection to maximize torque
-kills MPG though...kills it dead-

Yeah...the only good benefit of sport mode in my opinion. I get closer to 21 mpgs in my SR5 but only running 265/65 R17 on Nitto Ridge grapplers. The awful fake engine noise in sport mode killed it for me...even more than the bad gas mileage. Sport mode in a top heavy vehicle is silly to me.

Agreed on the Tow mode. You get a similar benefit as sport mode (although maybe not the tightened steering) without the fake engine noise. At least the gearing is sportier. Does anyone know if tow mode also provides some tighter steering? It seems like it would be a benefit you want when actually towing.

On some builds they pipe fake engine noise over the speakers in Sport Mode. You can disable it with Carista though.

Personally I always drive in sport mode, not because it’s faster but because it gives you better throttle response. I actually get better gas mileage in Sport mode over normal because I’m not having to press the gas pedal down so much each time I get started.

I noticed the same sort of experience trying ECO. I didn't get any better gas mileage than Normal because I modulate the gas already and rarely go anywhere near the floor. I already disabled engine noise with Carista so I might try Sport just to see how the throttle response is overall plus the tighter steering might be nice.

I always drive in sport mode. I think it gives better response, faster shifting . Very little decrease in MPG from normal mode. ECO mode didn't give much more MPG and seemed to be a bit more sluggish than normal mode. I don't have any fake engine noise. I have the TRD Sport Premium 4x4 gas model. I believe, but could be wrong, that only the hybrid models have the fake noise.

all models have fake engine noise, called ESE, enabled

My SR5 had it, I turned it off. left ANC on

I don't see how you would not be able to tell and hear it when you go from Normal to Sport and hit the throttle...the manufactured fake v6 engine noise is nauseating.

Better gas mileage?? How is that logically possible? Sport mode keeps you in the boost all the time. You use more gas when boosted.

Weird but I agree, I've seen better mileage from Sport than Normal on similar trips and the plus of the feature is well worth it.

Even tho I use the same gas from the same Mobil I can't get a handle of the mileage in this thing. Even with driving the same routes doing similar speeds it can fluctuate a gpm or more, sometime several.

Sport mode keeps you in the boost all the time.
That is not how turbos work.

'ā€œSPORTā€ mode
Assists acceleration response by
controlling the transmission, engine
and steering. Suitable for when pre-
cise handling is desirable, for
example when driving on mountain
roads. The ā€œSPORTā€ indicator
comes on.'

It keeps the revs higher to get quicker throttle response which means you'll get to boost quicker, but you don't stay in boost all the time. In the end it all comes down to how much you are slamming down on the gas, or not.
