Sensitivity adjustment is for the touch screen . Not switching light/dark .

I have noticed this when going under even a short underpass, but not otherwise. I have mine set to the default settings.

I've noticed it too, but my headlights were on Auto. I wonder if it would stay Dark when headlights are explicitly On. And Light when running on daytime lights only. That would make sense, so it probably does not work that way...

Yea I noticed this now more with getting darker earlier. I don’t normally drive around sunset but just driving through a side street 35mph road with large trees overhead the scree keeps flickering in and out of nighttime it’s distracting even just looking straight it’s noticeable.

on mine
screen dimmer follows actual outside illumination
independent of headlight switch position

headlight switch has no effect

That's what I suspected. The Garmin GPS in my other vehicle switches on calculated Sunrise/Sunset in the current location. Works very well. I think Toyota should add that as an option.

In Carista, there is a setting:
  • Instrument lights restoring sensitivity
    Darkest
    Darker
    Normal
    Lighter
    Lightest
This is worth trying. The way it is phrased, it suggests it would only change the light level at which it switches, not the latency range, i.e. the difference between the light level needed to go from dark to light and vice versa. But it is possible that it will help. I'll set it to darkest and see what happens. Thanks!

thats how i read it as when the headlights come on. darker means it needs to be darker outside to turn on the lights and lighter would mean more sunlight

edit: i have at times not seen eye to eye with how carista name stuff vs how toyots GTS (global techstream) lists them

Well, I set the light sensitivity to Darker and it did not help. I drive weekly 60 miles on a tree lined road with occasional gaps in the canopy (Trees to Sea Scenic Byway it is called). It keeps switching the screen mode on me every time I approach such gap. It is distracting enough that I finally hard set the screen to daytime only and there it will stay unless I have a long night drive and switch it manually back. What an unnecessary nuisance.

I believe if you turn off your auto headlights it will stop it from switching. But then you will have to slum it and turn on your headlights yourself. 🤣

Thanks, I'll try it. Certainly would be easier to turn on the headlights manually then going rummaging in the screen settings to switch the screen mode.

I have my headlights switch on DRL and my screen still switches when I pass under FWY overpasses.

I drove the tree lined road today and the hard set to daytime mode pretty much solved the problem. The screen still dims in the darker places, but that is fine, even desirable. The decrease/increase in brightness is a heck of a lot less distracting than switching the entire color scheme.
