I have a new 25 TRD ORP that for the most part I love it but I experiencing what could be best described as jittery like ride most noticeable it seems between around 40- 45 -47 mph. Let me say I have the XSeries that has 265/70R18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on the TRD wheels. I have put about 1200 miles on it and recently took a road trip and it is smooth as can be on the highway. But it seems to have this like jittery like ride around the speeds mention above. Sometimes it seems like it doesn’t and other times on what seems like a smooth brand new paved road it is just jittery enough that it’s noticeable. My tire pressure is set to 32 cold and it doesn’t really feel like a balance issue. They glide down the highway smooth as ever. Can tires even be out of balance at say 45 but not 70….seems like it it was out of balance it would become worse with speed. Either way it doesn’t really feel like it’s balance. I know the tread is aggressive and body on frame etc but I came from a Jeep on 35s with aggressive tires that was smooth as could be at any speed. I’m not even sure not smooth is the best way to describe it but rather jittery almost like the tires and shocks are super stiff with no weight in back. It drives straight as an arrow and no vibrations felt up front or anything but just a jittery like effect more towards the back. Is anyone else experiencing this with the TRD OR or aggressive tires. I’ve had a lot of trucks and Jeeps etc and never really felt that I really recall.

a shimmy you feel around 45 mph but not at 70 mph is usually from a bent rim, out-of-round tire, or road-force variation, not a simple weight imbalance. Have a shop do a road-force balance and inspect the wheels/tires for run-out or shifted belts.

Sometimes you will feel peak vibration or resonance at 45mph but not as much at 70mph

It definitely seems like it’s more noticeable on some roads than others and some roads seems almost non existent. When we test drove another one before buying this one is seemed to have the same jitters. I haven’t driven one that did not have the Ridge Grapplers so I have nothing to compare it too other than one just like it. I had a 24 Tacoma TRD OR and it didn’t jitter like this.

Having the same jittery ride issue with my TRD offroad non-hybrid non-premium. My theory is that the springs were developed for the hybrid, which is 400lb heavier. Maybe try putting in 400lb in the back and see if the issue persists. I'm interested in a fix as the rough/jittery ride is unbearable for me

It could be a tire uniformity issue. If you have the tires and wheels "road force balanced" (which has nothing to do with balance) they measure the stiffness variation around the whole circumference of the tire. You want the stiffness to vary by less than 10 pounds and if any tires are around 20 or more that could be your issue.

This may not be your problem, it's just a very common problem with truck tires and it can be elusive since you may only feel it when the stiffest part of both rear tires are lined up. Another way of doing a quick check is swapping tires/wheels from front to back to see if the issue changes.

My 2008 Toyota Sequoia with 260,000 miles doesn’t have the jitters that this new one has 😢

I seriously doubt it's the tires, it feels like the springs are just not compressing at all over smaller bumps/imperfections.

Has anyone tried putting tacoma springs/shocks on this?

To me it feels like the springs are actually on the softer side however the shock is very over damped on compression.

I haven't experienced this myself in a 4Runner yet, but I have noticed this driving a Tundra and Tacoma. To me it almost feels like a torque converter lock up issue. The way it vibrates does not feel like a rim or tire issue. Its a very particular pulsation that doesn't always happen but when it does, its pretty much always around the same speeds.

I have a TRD Sport that came with 20" wheels and swapped to some 265/70/18 Toyo AT3's at around 140 miles. I immediately noticed how much more jarring/stiff these tires felt(vs the road Dunlop's that came stock) and then lowered the cold psi to 33. After a couple of days the ride smoothed out a bit, but when I hit certain road undulations/ braking bumps like, it rattles the truck like mad. On smooth stretches on the roads or Hwy up to 80mph, the ride is smooth, so it's not a balance issue. When I hit dips and bigger impacts the suspension soaks them up much better, but over small 30' ripples, it jars the truck, especially on a slight bend in the road, like an offramp to my house. I know where these certain spots are and try to avoid them. This is also my first experience with AT tires.

I felt mine was very stiff when I first brought it home to the point I considered trading it in. I loved the truck so much I figured I'd stick it out and see if it improved. Glad I did. Now have 6K on it and the suspension has broken in and rides much smoother.

i actually noticed a slight improvement going from 34-36psi down to exactly 33 all around. Could just be placebo who knows

Anyways i still really dont think its the tires, definitely feels like the springs/shocks have higher "activation energy" and dont compress at all over the smaller bumps. Over large rocks or speedbumps it actually feels fine.
