OEM Half-Gas Tank Skid Plate to Full Skid Plate Upgrade Install - Limited/Platinum/SR5(?)/Sport(?)

I checked around to see if anyone had already posted this but I couldn’t find anything.

For those who’s trims (Limited/Platinum and maybe SR5/Sport I’m not sure) have the OEM half gas tank skid plate and want to upgrade to the full-coverage ones found on the off-road models here is the part number:

Fuel Tank Protector Sub-Assembly
Part Number: 77606-35091

You’ll also need 2 more of these bolts to complete the process as you can reuse the 3 currently on the half-skid plate. This is the part number.

Bolt With Washer
Part Number: 90119-08D63

I’ve installed the skid plate with no issues. It was about as annoying as installing any of the other skid plates but not too difficult.

Also the half-plate’s part number is #77606-35100 in case anyone was curious. Attached is a picture of both plates side by side. There’s a huge difference.

Sure!
1. I did my swap on a stock configuration with no lift and without jacking it up. It’s a tight squeeze but it is possible.
2. The two interior bolts are the most difficult as they are above the propeller shaft. I had to use a flex-head box end ratcheting wrench to get them out but you may be able to get a ratchet in there too.
3. Wear cut resistant gloves. Your hands will be extremely close to the razor-sharp heat shielding while you remove the bolts.
4. You may need a second person to help pivot the new skid plate into place as you have to clear the propeller shaft with the brackets. Thankfully, the gas tank skid plate is a lot more flexible than the other skid plates so it is easier to get into place.

I’m pretty sure this is for both the hybrid and non-hybrid but I have only installed it in my hybrid limited so I can’t 100% confirm, unfortunately.
I had the OEM transfer case skid plate, OEM differential skid plate, and OEM Land Cruiser front skid plate installed prior to installing the gas tank skid plate. It doesn’t touch any of those as far as I saw.

Because I can’t confirm 100% I’d recommend checking under your 4Runner to make sure the 2 unused nut welds are present before ordering. I wish I had access to other trims to make sure but unfortunately I don’t.

Forgot to say that if you have power folding steps you will want to turn those off. I’m not sure if they stop when they hit something solid but I wouldn’t want to find out that they don’t while under them.

Just curious, why choose the OEM option over something like a Cali Raised or RCI skid?

For me it was just price. I ordered my skid plate during the 4th of July sale and got it for around 280 with free shipping. The non-oem skid plates are a bit more expensive but are probably more durable if that’s what you need.

I put a Rival gas tank skid on mine and it was $399. And yes you'll probably need someone to help you put the skid on once you've got all the bolts ready. I had my kid jack up the skid on a floor jack and it made life so much easier.
