Hi all,
I am proud to be apart of this 6th gen community. Just purchased a TRD sport premium and have a lot of rookie questions so bear with me. I’ll be doing mostly highway/city driving and live in Florida so I really only have to worry about rain. But I was hoping to upgrade/update the wheels and tires for a more aggressive look. I’m not too worried about mpg change as long as it’s not ridiculous. MOST important is ride comfort and noise. That said, I have the following questions. Thank you in advance.
1. Myth about larger wheel =rougher ride?
was thinking of getting the TRD pro wheels but not sure how that affect ride and driving noise. Or just powder coat the sport wheels and upgrade to 265/60r20s. the
2. I believe the trd pro wheels come with a wider offset? Not sure what that means exactly. I prefer to not have the tires push out past the “fender flares”
3. In terms of process, if I chose to keep the sport wheels, would it make more sense to get upgraded tires first then powder coat or opposite route is better?
4. Does lift affect suspension? Was thinking of just a slight leveling kit but don’t want to affect the vehicle in the long run.
5. last one - ridge grapplers, terra grapplers, or at4s? Again I want an aggressive look but I don’t want to be changing these out after 30k miles. I’m seeing a lot of dealers put the ridge grapplers on.
sorry for the long winded post but really want to get this right lol. Thanks again for all the help!

Congrats on the purchase! The Sport, Limited, and Platinum trims all have 20 inch wheels, the TRD Pro wheels are 18s. Not sure if this affects your other questions.

Hey thank you! I was trying to ask if it’s a better idea to swap for the trd wheels and then upgrade tires? I think it already rides fine on 20 in wheels but didn’t know if it would be even smoother /same noise level with the trd pros. I see alot of ppl immediately swapping to smaller inch wheels on their Sports so I wanted to get some feedback.

Congrats!
1) Larger diameter wheel = less sidewall on the tire to keep the overall diameter the same. Less sidewall translates to firmer ride.
2) You are correct, wider offset will create a wider track, potentially pushing the tires outside of the fenders. Another thing people do is put wheel spacers behind the wheels which pushes the wheels outward.
3) Why would you want to buy new tires on a new vehicle when you don't need snow tires or Mud tires? I wouldn't spend money to replace new tires unless there is a specific need.
4) Lift does impact suspension.
5) See #3. Also, do some research on TireRack.com

Nice thank you for the info! For the sake of posterity, say I had a few extra bucks lying around and I wanted a more aggressive look for my tires and I kept my 20in wheels…would 265/60r20 ridge grapplers be a decent choice?

I put TRD Pro wheels on my Sport premium. The ride is a little better, meaning not as jarring on bumpy roads. I also put Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT tires (265/65r18). They are a little noisier than stock but not bad. It made a big difference in the look of the truck. There is a tiny bit of poke more than the stock tires. These are basically the same circumference as the factory 20” Geolanders. Here are some pics.

This is tough, nice job!! Few follow up questions. What made you go with Mickey Thompsons over other tires?
Do they only stick out a little bc of the trd pro rim “offset”?
Where did you go for the trd pro wheels?
assuming no rub since they’re same circumference?

Did lots of research on the tires The Baja Boss is a little lighter than others and has a 65K warranty and made in the U.S. The poke is due to the wheel offset. Not a lot of poke. I bought the wheels at Elmhurst Toyota parts with new valve stems. The wheels were right around $222 Each. No rub even on mud flaps. That’s why I went with this size.

I live just south of Tampa so no snow just rain. Don't do much off road anymore so just on street. I traded in a Jeep Wrangler (did a lot of off roading with it) for a 2025 6th gen 4Runner Sport Premium. Ordered it with the 20 inch rim and the Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. They look good, do not extend beyond the fender, handle well and are much quieter than the BF Goodrich KO2 A/Ts I had on the Jeep.

I have 285/70/17 M/T's on stock SR5 wheels and my ride quality is fine. I also ride at 30psi, i honestly enjoy it more than the stock 245's. You can only here subtle noise on the highway with windows down but my music is typically too loud at 35-40 volume to notice. No chub rub either.

I have 275/55/20. I also drive with the windows up, the A/C on (it is Florida) and the radio volume up so tire noise is never a problem, lol.

In a nutshell, if you are after a smooth and quiet ride, any all terrain tires will be worse in that department than what you have. Yes smaller rim diameter will also help in reducing firmness over small imperfections on the road.
Maybe wait until you find a good deal on TRD OR wheels + 18" and get a set of all weather tires.
