First off, hello! New guy here, and just recently purchased a '26 ORP Hybrid in Underground. Really excited to take delivery, however I noticed a nasty paint imperfection on the hood, so the dealer is having the hood repainted before I take delivery. My question: has anyone else experienced having bad paint imperfections on panels, and what was your experience/impression with the repair prior to taking delivery? The dealer I'm working with has been helpful, however when I mentioned removing the orange peel, the sales manager said, and I quote, "they all come with orange peel, we won't be doing a paint correction on the entire vehicle, just returning it to how it should have come from the factory." My push-back is that for a $60K+ vehicle, it should've come flawless (I guess I have higher expectations and standards than they do). I'm a bit miffed that my 4Runner had 2 miles on it when I went to get it, but now will have close to 40 miles on it by the time I take actual delivery (tomorrow or Thursday).

TL;DR - anyone else have paint issues on their hood at delivery, had the dealer fix the issue, and what were your impressions of the repair once completed?

I am very OCD about my vehicles. My dealer even stuck a giant dealer decal on the rear that I had them remove before I took delivery. My paint was flawless all around and didn't notice any issues. In Texas, for a data point.

I can't comment on the paint defect part, but every car has orange peel, its normal and honestly a good thing (you don't want mirror finished paint). The only cars that don't have orange peel might be ones that are in car show cars and those aren't being driven, have custom paint jobs and 100's of hours worth of wet sanding and polishing.

most if not all dealers contract roving professional paint correction people
or shops, who exist soley to correct new car paint defects before delivery to customer.
or to fix things customers discover later.

scratches and dings happen all the time, it is not possible to build and move large items like cars and keep them all perfect 100% the time.

these paint fixers are good at what they do and dollars to donuts you will never be able
to tell they did a job.

as far as orange peel all have orange peel along the bottom of the body. it is not a defect it is meant to resist impacts from small grit and road debris which is constantly peppering the lower body.

That makes perfect sense, and now seeing you say that, I do have some along the very bottom of the door panels, but that area was also covered with PPF. Luckily that didn't trigger my OCD.

Oh I understand most cars have orange peel, especially around the rockers, that I agree with. I just don't want to see obvious, horrible orange peel on the hood or have it not perfectly match the rest of the panels. I'm OCD when it comes to my vehicles, so I know nothing is perfectly flawless, but I expect it to be close for a brand-new vehicle. Then again, I am coming from a '21 Jeep Wrangler, so expectations have been adjusted accordingly. lol

All paint won't be perfect coming from Toyota. They always wash it before delivery, and then again after you buy it. My paint wasn't perfect when I got mine, it was swirled a little bit, but, after I got my first pinstripes, I stopped caring for the paint. It's protected, but in terms of buffing it, don't feel like doing it.

Also, the orange peel is fairly common, although doesn't bother me cause you can barely notice it

I don't expect perfection either, don't get me wrong...but the imperfection I saw should've been caught during PDI, wasn't, and now they have to repaint the entire hood (and likely do some minor blending into the fenders). As soon as I get it, she's going straight to get ceramic coated and the front windows tinted. Thankfully, the dealer was pretty cool and threw in the Aux switch pigtails for me to compensate for my frustration (as well as a free loaner during this time). All in all, I just want to drive my new "truck"! Adios Jeep, hello 4Runner. lol

The only thing I noticed on mine was some swirling around the gas cap cover. The rest of the paint looks fine. Before winter hit, I laid down a layer of glaze and wax and didn’t see anything else.

The dealer washed mine and applied BS treatment. Paint had scratched and swirls. In many places. I am over it now but advice is, do not let the dealers lowest paid employees wash or detail your car.

I've got the 2025 Trailhunter in the underground color, the paint is unusually thin and imperfections pop up all the time. It's just cheap paint. I noticed the imperfection 6 months after I had it ceramic coated, that didn't seem to help. If you want to protect it you'll have to do ppf.

Hey OP,

Congrats on your new ride. Yeah, the paint is horrible on the 4Runners. I have a black Pro and my hood had to be repainted and they sent it out for a full paint correction, both at their cost, which was over $2k. It was much better after and I went ahead and got a full Stealth PPF, so I didn't go crazy worrying about it! Here are my original posts on it:

Good luck with yours and happy driving!

Thanks all! Dealer called me yesterday and said the hood repaint should be ready by COB today or tomorrow, so hopefully I can finally take delivery....just to send her off to be tinted and ceramic coated while I'm out of town next week. LOL

It's usually a good idea to wait a bit on the ceramic coating after new paint. The paint needs to set and cure, usually 30 to 90 days.
