Is it possible to add/move the five or six heating/AC/etc toggle switches to the MM display.
I am having a difficult time safely using them while driving.

Too much time with eyes off the road to identify and actuate the things.

Any other suggestions to safely use these would be appreciated.

Thanks

a bunch of Toyotas
it is technically possible,
but can anyone do it without rewriting firmware, nope.

make it safer ? why not keep driving and learn the controls
so over time you develop instant reflexes that do not distract when you need to
adjust something. typically most if not all drivers 'become one' with
the vehicle after some time and many control actions become automatic

It is sort of interesting. All the other things I have driven I pretty much get it fairly quickly.
Not this one, 7000 miles, one year and the only one I can safely (sort of) use is the fan control. Even then I have to look down to find the correct one.
Either I am not intuitive or the controls aren't.
Base on lack of other complaints I worry about the answer.
😬

You are onto something.
I wear bifocals, lower great for reading, upper great for distance. Dashboard is in between and blurry.
I bought a pair of driving glasses but they ended up a PITA.

So it goes.

There you go! Mystery solved 😂

You're the first I hear that complain about the HVAC switches. Lexus GX550's owners hate their integrated on-screen HVAC buttons. Those are not tactile, you don't get the feel if you changing or not and sometime can be missed when on uneven road. Appreciate what you have lol!

I've become used to it by which of my fingers land on specific buttons when my arm is resting on the gear select. For example my middle turns up and down the air flow power. Left index controls which vents the air flow comes out of floor windshield etc. lol hope that helps 😂

^^this^^

Our 2020 Ford Ranger had both manual and on-screen buttons. Manual buttons were dinky and impossible to find or see in the dark. On-screen buttons were like playing whack-a-mole to get a finger in the correct location.

Our ORP manual controls are great, simplicity... with the exception of lacking dual-climate

Progressive glasses are great for driving. Easy to see the road and interior. Feels natural once adjusted to them.

Or you can look like a lunatic in traffic yelling at the steering wheel.

Apparently voice commands will adjust temp., fan speed, on off AC , or power up/down the whole mess.

The defrost is not in there but AC will solve that.
I think seat heat/cooling is in there.

Looks like I won't have to use my left index finger after all.

I'm not a fan of the look of the switches. Probably won't help with seeing them but AJT makes black covers for them. Blends in much better with other black trim.

give it time and muscle memory will kick in. after a year, i can pretty much feel by touch which toggle switch i am using and even faster doing a quick glance.

trust me, this layout is way better than our 2023 tundra and after 3 yrs i still couldnt execute a change as fast as i can in the 4R.

i mean its not like the 5th gen where i could do it in the dark while driving and not even look, but it was an easy transition to the 6th gen controls.

granted i only use the off, mode and fan speed controls and they are the easiest to get to from the leftmost button and sliding right. i only swap between 2 different modes, feet and feet/vent.

the only difference is my control layout is totally different on a platinum than the other trims i think ?

Honestly for me, the climate controls are super simple and laid out about perfect. I have drive so many rental cars where climate is a screen and its freaking terrible. My Dads outback has sooo much shit in the main display it's maddening (it does have manual buttons but why clutter up the already too busy main screen). Hate it.

99.9% of the time I don't ever touch climate controls. Set on auto and away we go.

The 4runner is just so simple to me.

I dont mind the buttons or layout and am super thankful they're not fake touch buttons. I'll piggyback on this with a few questions about the automatic HVAC system in my Trailhunter.

I normally leave it in AUTO with SYNC enabled and the temperature set to 72F or so. When AUTO is selected, the HVAC display is essentially blank. There's no blower speed indication or indication of whether A/C is enabled.

If I press the A/C button while in AUTO, the display shows A/C ON, but the system apparently continues operating automatically. Pressing AUTO again clears the A/C indication. So what exactly is the difference between these two operating states? Is cooling/dehumidification enabled automatically, or does pressing A/C explicitly enable it? I'm not referring to whether the compressor is physically running at any given moment, but whether the system is permitted to use it.

I've also noticed that pressing OFF leaves an airflow-direction icon displayed, showing air directed toward the upper body. I'm assuming the blower is actually off and it's simply retaining the vent selection, but why display that at all when the system is off?

I'm accustomed to automatic climate-control systems that provide a little more information about what they're doing. Has anyone figured out Toyota's logic here or found a more detailed explanation?

I know it's a bit off-topic, but I like the climate control buttons in my SR5. What I don't like - is the volume control button. It's smooth-turning (no tactile click) and is a bit laggy/delayed to the actual level it hits on the screen.

before toyota wouldnt even give an indicator of vent setting when the system was off. you would have to remember that you had the vents set to feet, defrost, vents.

there is still airflow even when off if the outside air is on, just from driving pushing air thru the system. depending on temp even that is enough airflow to keep things in check temp wise for some people (including myself)

as far as auto, personally i never used it since its introduction back on my 1984 cressida (it was very crude). the way it regulates fan speed drives me nuts. (most lower trims got the auto modulation in the 2000's)

i usually sit between 1-3 bars speed 80% of the time when i am by myself. and 6 bars during the winter warm up during remote start.

and yes i manually set my temp/fan speed even on remote starts (but i imagine that gets over ruled now within the toyota app since i can set temp, defrost mode, seat heater/venting now only during remote start run mode)

it reverts back to my previous setting once i over ride remote start when i get in.

and all bets are off when the wife is in the passenger seat, that woman drives me nuts on trips and her temp settings
