Hitch - Tongue Weight Capacity

The towing capacity on my TRD OR is 6000 pounds, making recommended tongue weight 600 pounds. I suspect the hitch is strong enough to handle more, but this is my first new Toyota since 1996.

Our travel trailer is spec’s at 7500 fully loaded, and I want to use the 4R to move it around the property and into the barn. The terrain has a bit of rocky cobble, but nothing outrageous. The 4R would be easier to maneuver than the F350.

So the question is… has anyone experienced hitch or suspension damage due to possibly being 150ish pounds over the recommended weight? I suspect there’s no problem, but thought I’d ask.

You will be completely fine moving it around your property. The 6,000-pound towing and 600-pound tongue weight limits are rated for highway speeds, braking, and legal liability.

For just shuffling the trailer into the barn at walking speeds, the frame and hitch can easily handle an extra 150 pounds of static tongue weight. Just drop it into 4-Low to take the stress off the transmission when crawling over that rocky cobble, and keep an eye on your rear suspension sag while moving. Just definitely don't take that setup out on the public roads!

I had a 7500 trailer until recently. My main tow vehicle was also an F35. Heck, the Ford did not even know I was towing, lots of power.
Anyways, I used to tow the trailer with a Polaris 800 ATV. I added two wheled jacks on the frame to support some of the hitch weight and was able to move it fine.

Then I had a Ford Escape 2.0 Eco. Lots of power but very low tow specs. I started using it. No issues or damage. Saved me buying an RV dolly.

I cannot speak to the 4R but if it were me, I would try. Shame its not a smooth surface like concrete or blacktop. Gravel will add to the load.

Even with the extra tongue weight, you're within payload specs, so there should be no suspension damage at all. If you're just moving the trailer around the yard, it should be no problem.

could use a electrified rv trolley but the cost is $$$ for them, but they are great if you need them at an rv site not just at home
