You're comparing an eco hybrid in a unibody SUV to a performance hybrid in a body-on-frame SUV. They really are two VERY different vehicles, and the hybrid systems are entirely different.
My wife has a Rav4 Hybrid, and it could not be more different in driving dynamics and implementation.
Yes you're right but my point is I can guarantee that Toyota has a way to do it and they are choosing not to just to keep that Gap and keep us in this price point.

There is probably some truth to that, but I really think what they'd have to sacrifice to make the 4Runner Hybrid gain anywhere near the gas mileage that would really satisfy us would ruin it.

Or, it would just make it entirely too expensive. Battery technology is probably part of the reason it's limited. We don't get high capacity expensive lithium batteries. We just get Nickel-metal hydride.

as has been previously noted, the BoF hybrid system was designed for power not MPG. it has never been touted in anything by toyota that the BoF was for MPG.

this is evident in the new tundra, sequoia, tacoma or the 4runner. if you expect better mpg you are in the wrong model lineup within toyota.

you want mpg, go get a unibody vehicle (venza, highlander, grand highlander, rav4, corolla cross, etc)

I thought I would get close to 325 miles, but I only went 292 miles in my first tank. Is this normal or does it take a few fillups for the gas to get better.
My husband drives like an old man because he is?. He was able to average 26.4 on our last trip in our ORP non hybrid. We had around 1000 miles on it.

Tro pro iForcemax getting 16 to 17 mpg after 700 miles. It is supposed to do 23 city and 24 highway. The wife and I do mostly highway and do not have a heavy foot. This is the first vehicle we have had this issue with, so please tell me it gets better.

Just do what I do. Set up your gauge cluster so that you don't see the mpg. When it's empty, fill it back up. Don't worry about the mpg. You didn't get a TRD Pro for the mpg. You could've got a Rav4 for that. You'll be happier. One less thing to worry about.

1300 mi and I am showing 18.4 mpg average with about 1/2 the mileage on hwy at 70 mph in eco mode. Better than the 15 mpg average my 5th gen got but not by much.

BTW the new hybrid Subaru Forester gets a 40% more mileage per tank over the gas motor. Yes, apples and oranges but the point is that it can be done.

The iforce Max hybrid is more about the power and not getting extra gas mileage. The Subaru is a different story.

I've had my Trailhunter about 7 months now. I'm averaging close to 18 MPG. On a long trip from Central Texas to Colorado and back I averaged 19 MPG, the lowest mileage was and the best was 21. The mileage didn't start creeping up until I had over 2,000 miles on it. With all the extra weight from the skid plates, Rock rails and roof rack I'm not surprised at the lower mileage than advertised, it weighs a lot more than the lower trims. I currently am coming up on 5,000 miles, I was getting 14 and 15 MPG before my thousand Mile Mark.

When I first got my Pro it was around 320. Now it’s at 285ish it’s not a big deal to me. We only have a 19 gallon tank anyway.

Great Point! I will remove it from my cluster!
