Gas Mileage Improvement Theory

Hi. We have 3600 miles on our TRD Pro now. We have been getting amazing gas milage on a 1500 mile roadtrip so far. Averaging 21-24 mpg with a fully loaded rig, so much so that the rear was sagging 1.5” and Inhad to inflate my rear Airlift 1000 airbags to level her.

Before this road trip, I averaged 18 mpg. Even when doing local 2-3 hour freeway drives.

But now we are seeing 21-24 mpg. Im so stocked.

The reason why, I think, is because at home, where I usually drive (SF Bay Area-Marin County) is very hilly and seems Im always driving uphill.

On the roadtrip we are on, CA through NV, OR, ID, MT and now in Canada, its pretty flat. You do go up a ways, but then you go down a lot too.

Im so happy to finally see the advertised gas milage on 33” tires and fully loaded!

the miles to empty will adjust up/down accordingly to how your last tank or 2 mpg was.

i avg 15 around town in my 14 4R, 16-18 driving to work, and my long trip to GA (1800 miles 1-way) i get between 19-21, and sometimes rarely up to 24 mpg if i can get a decent tailwind

Stop and go is also one of the biggest mpg killers. At just shy of 2,000 miles, we get consistently 23.0 - that's mostly highway miles, as we live in the country and have a decent drive to kiddos' school and town. When I run errands in town, it always drops a few tenths of a gallon.

I have about 1000 miles on my gas off-road premium. I’m old as dirt and I drive very conservatively, I glide to the stop signs and I accelerate slowly and steady. I get about 16.7 MPG. I drive mostly short distances seldom on the highways. I used to get about 15-16 on my 2016 f4runner.

I live just outside of Nashville, which is somewhat hilly in spots. I have about 1600 miles on my TRD Pro and was averaging about 18 mpg. I switched from Normal driving mode to ECO driving mode and noticed my mpg bumped up to about 21mpg. Highway usage 3 days a week (22mi each way), the rest is city driving. Maybe my TRD is still breaking in? I have seen drives where I hit 23mpg so I know its possible.

Decades ago I bought a Ski Doo snowmachine. The dealer told me that after about 500 IIRC the computer would change from break in mode to normal. It happened while I was crossing a frozen lake and it was like a turbo kicking in. It wouldn't surprise me if Toyota does the same thing for the first couple thousand miles. Just less dramatic, of course. Once the mileage or hours are reached the computer advance the timing and/or the air fuel ratio and the mileage increases.

We get as high as 25 occasionally (right at 2,000 miles) on highway trips!

I have a 2025 TRD Sport Premium gas model with 20 inch Nitto Grappler tires. I drive mostly city and some interstate. Only got 16.9 MPG in normal mode. Am just below 3,000 on the odometer, changed to sport mode and now getting 19.9. Still not as advertised but I do have the 20 inch tires and drive with a lead foot, lol.
