Setting the gear lever to manual shift mode and upshifting does not do anything in 4LO.

I don't like being stuck at 2.5k rpm in 4lo, too loud and too much engine braking

Anyone else have this issue?

It’s not really a manual mode, you’re just telling the computer you don’t want it to upshift past the gear you choose.

It doesn’t prevent it from shifting to or staying at a lower gear.

No idea…. When do you typically switch into 4LO? Is it for slowing down going downhill, or do you find you need it for the torque going on flat or uphill?

mostly for steep hillclimbs/obstacles, but I'd like to be able to drive a bit faster between offroad obstacles

You should definitely be switching back to 4HI of you plan on going over 10mph or so. Manual also says if you have the rear diff locked you shouldn't exceed 5mph.

Wow. Had no idea you couldnt manually shift in 4Lo. Seems odd that a manual trans can manage it, but not this super fancy modern 8 speed.

this super fancy modern 8 speed does NOT need to be manually shifted in any gear.
just let it do it's thing in 4lo you'll get the best performance and precision control out of it
