This inquiry is to folks who rock-crawl with their Gen 6 non-hybrid 4Runner.
When I'm driving in low range, the truck shifts from 1st to 2nd gears at a reasonable 2200 rpm, about 4 mph.
Shifting from 2nd to 3rd is at about 3500 rpm, 13 mph which is already too fast for some rough terrain.
3rd to 4th is at 4500 rpm, 24 mph. And it won't go into 5th until 5000 rpm, 32 mph.
Over many years of off-roading, I've had 3 Tacomas and a Tundra. they all shifted at reasonable speeds, but now I'm essentially stuck with 2 useable gears. To compare, I drove a new Tacoma (it happened to be a hybrid). Each gear change was reasonable at around 2200 to 2500 rpm. The dealer said it was unreasonable of me to compare hybrid vs non-hybrid, and that with non-hybrids, Toyota programs higher shift points to get into a better torque range. That's nonsense since with the 2.4 L engine, torque peaks at below 2000 rpm.
I've called Toyota and opened a case with them. They called today to say that they aren't willing to help.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience off-road with a non-hybrid. Is mine the only one with this condition?
Thanks.

My LC250 2.4l hybrid has this horrible shifting in low range too. I often switch to manual mode to keep the rpms down.

Manual mode also sucks because if say you're in 3rd gear and slow down, the vehicle will automatically switch back to 1st and stay there, then you have to manually switch back through the gears.

Previous versions of toyotas didn't do that, so I'm not sure why they changed it. Maybe someone from the aftermarket can update the shift programing?
