hard shift only when cold. warm it up via keyfob and give it 5 mins... never happens.

... I think it is getting better, been driving it immediately after start and it seems* to
be behaving. 3045 miles SR5 4wd

*I always expect it to thump when cold so I am driving the first 1/2 mile super light
Ok so now based on this thread, I stopped babying it.

and it's gone.

It has learned and it doesn't thump anymore. the first shift is smooth now and behaves

I noticed a hard shift when first accelerating in the first drive in the morning when mine was new (86 to 700 miles). Isn’t noticeable anymore. Is it me or did the trans learn?

I am at 4700, mi and it still does it to me every single cold start. And I don't baby it. It is what it is and I'm not going to worry about it anymore.

I really doubt that the transmission 'learns' anything. What does it try to learn? Shifting is based on rpm/speed. What if the truck is shared by 2 people everyday like husband and wife? Is it going to learn and relearn from each driver overwriting one another? I really doubt it but of course I may be wrong. It may have built-in AI, who knows? 🙂

I never thought it was something to worry about. My theory still is that it's not the transmission but something to do with the hybrid engaging? Does it happen to non-hybrid folk?

it does learn and Toyota (and other mfr) transmissions have been learning for decades

There are default setting on everything.
The engine fueling, ignition mappings, transmission shift points/pressure etc
are at a basic pre programmed level.

When we say the "ECU learns", it means that these basic maps are fine tuned automatically by the computer, since it will be running in open loop mode (getting data from sensors).
For example, after an ECU reset, the duty cycle of the injectors may be ... 60%. After a little bit of driving, in a certain style, this value may increase to 62% (slighty richer), or if you drive sedate, 59%.

There only minor adjustments being made by ECU.

Same goes with the transmission. Electronic soldenoid triggering times, pressure sensors, pattern selection can be fine adjusted by the ECU itself to correct for different conditions. If it didn't do this, the car may be harsh in certain circumstances. Harsh as in, with default factory settings.
