Mobil 1 0w20 EP from Walmart every 6 months or 5K.
Done this with every vehicle I've owned and they're over 10+ years old / 150K+ miles, still running with no leaks or brunt oil

Concepts like thermal and mechanical efficiency is beyond forum level conversations for the most part.

It's like the V35A is technically more efficient than the 5.7 V8 it replaced - but it does so with less thermal and mechanical stress to boot.

10k / 1yr is fine for a daily driver on streets.

5k / 6mo is fine for the above, inclusive of 'severe service' like towing, off-roading, or lots of short trips.

This video details high level engine design choices and nuance for the turbo V6, but doesn't so much address the design flaw affecting production models.

Bingo...which is exaclty what Toyota engineers state in the service manual for our 4 Runners!

It baffles me that people can’t follow some good advice. If you choose to buy a used 6th generation at some point, make certain the owner’s oil change interval matches your standards. Good luck, future buyers of used 4Runners.

Baffles me that people actually think they know more than Toyota engineers. The advice will not hurt by any means, but does not necessarily help. I don't buy used vehicles...ever. I find theae forums are good for mod ideas and to track possible issues and if I others are having them. Never go to a automobile forum to get advice on how to care for your vehicle...nobody knows more than the manufactuer on how to care for their vehicles .

You do you! I’ll go with the empirical evidence showing the T24A-FTS shears 20-weight oil out of grade within 3k miles of use.

Quite a few of us know more than toyota engineers actually. Again, look at the V35A for reference.

You can do whatever you want. Blindly following what the Toyota engineers decide to put in the manual is your choice.

I choose to spend another $50 a year.

If anyone thinks that the engineers have the final say over the design and manufacturing of any vehicle or any component, they are living in a fantasy world. The accounting department and the bean counters have the final say on everything. If they can save five dollars on a vehicle by making something cheaper, they will do it.

Also, just think of the thousands of recalls on all the vehicles over the years, they are the result, for the most part, of some engineer screwing up or the bean counters forcing production to cheapen the quality.

It’s all about the money. Always has been, always will be.

as far as oil changes, go, use a decent quality oil and change it whenever you want. It’s your vehicle. I choose to change it every 5000 using Costco full synthetic. I’ve been doing that all my vehicles for many years, never any type of engine related malfunction.

a bunch of Toyotas
this is what matters and is easy for a shade tree mechanic to check

sure it says that in the manual

but for Toyota Certified technicians, the oil needs to be changed based on this:

HINT:

A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following situations, engine oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.

  • When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or after replacing the engine.
  • If low quality engine oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used.
  • When driving at high engine speeds or with a heavy load (when towing, etc.), or when accelerating or decelerating frequently while driving.
  • When idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic.
When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

Post-procedure
(d) None

2. CHECK ENGINE OIL QUALITY

(a) Check the engine oil for deterioration, water intrusion, discoloration or thinning.

If the quality is visibly poor, replace the engine oil and oil filter sub-assembly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, live long and prosper as an owner and do the 10,000 mile changes,
but when a Toyota Tech does any real work by the book they are going to analyze the
oil for how worn out it actually is, how much fuel dilution, basic color and
transparency, and replace it.

I am not gonna blindly follow 10,000 miles, I'm doing 5000 myself.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for example my 1999 4runner, 5VZFE, it has over 300,000 miles now and
has never had an engine problem or oil burning problem (ok it has weeping valve covers like all old 5VZFE have) runs great and still makes more power than it did it's first week driving it December 1998.

Recommended oil changes 5000 miles. I have ignored that and done only
10,000 mile Mobil 1 oil changes on that thing since mile 10,000 and it's been great.
But the 5VZFE is so much NOT a T24A-FTS. 5VZFE has proven itself that is it
unkillable. The T24A-FTS needs more time in the wild before it can be crowned
king of reliability.

BONUS INFO

If you want to go long in the interval (owner manual), there is a good test any shade tree mechanic can easily do. Compression test. This really tells a lot about how the cylinders and rings are doing.

11. INSPECT COMPRESSION

NOTICE:

Keep the spark plug holes free of foreign matter when measuring the compression pressure.

Pre-procedure

(a) Warm up the engine, then stop it.

(b) Check for DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes
(c) Remove the 4 spark plugs.

(d) Disconnect the 4 direct fuel injector assembly connectors and No. 5 engine wire connector.

Procedure

(e) Check the cylinder compression pressure.
(1) Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole.
(2) While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure.

NOTICE:
  • Always use a fully charged battery to obtain an engine speed of 250 rpm or more.
  • Measure the compression pressure as quickly as possible.

(f) If the cylinder compression pressure is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder and measure the compression again.

HINT:
  • If the compression increases, the piston rings and cylinder may be worn or damaged.
  • If no compression changes, there may be a defect of valve or cylinder head.
Post-procedure1

(g) Connect the 4 direct fuel injector assembly connectors and No. 5 engine wire connector.

(h) Install the 4 spark plugs.

(i) Clear the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine > Clear DTCs
NOTICE:

After the inspection, clear the DTCs, check for DTCs again and make sure the normal system code is output.
