I'm looking at all of my local toyota dealerships. They'll have 3 or 4 4Runners, and 30 to 40 Tacomas in stock! Same at all of them. I thought one had a better stock of 4Runners, but once I clicked and started browsing, turns out they're listing cars that are currently being built, in other words NOT in stock, cars that may be in stock in a few weeks or months.

What is up with that? Is this how it always is? Did another container ship get stuck in a canal or something? Its hard to negotiate a price when there is essentially no supply at all!

Whatever you do don’t fucking put a deposit down. Keep calling local stealerships like weekly eventually you will find one. Took me a month of non stop calling March 2025 to get mine

I put a deposit down in December and got my 4 Runner in Early February. The deposit was fully refundable. I wasn’t in a hurry anyway. My dealer hasn’t had any 4 Runners in stock for months. They are all pre sold Before they hit the lot.

most 4runner are pre-sold still after a year in production.

the fact that its still made in the tahara plant and overall build and fit/finish quality is above the taco/tundra is what is keeping them in short supply.

Hot tip: If the pictures of the vehicle on the dealer's website aren't taken at the dealership, the vehicle probably isn't in stock.

After looking at a few dozen 4Runners on dealer websites you should be able to tell pretty easily. It seems like they all use the same "stock" pictures for trucks that are being built/in transit.

Maybe I just got lucky, but when I decided to pull the trigger on my 4R I called my local (small) dealership and told them the trim and color I wanted. They didn’t have one on the lot but had it next day from a state over.

They only have 2-3 on the lot, but it didn’t seem to be a problem getting one to my preference.

I do have a solid history with them, so maybe that makes a difference?

If it’s a non refundable deposit, I definitely agree! After a year of infrequently checking the closest dealer, I found one last May.

I emailed every dealer who had one within 100 miles(SoCal so just image how many dealers that is) in trim and Color I wanted. 90% were in transit and supposed to be del in a week or two. One dealer had two and both sold same day ( one was mine) the rest are still on lots mostly because those dealers refused to deal. The one I was actually looking at first as they had best deal is still in transit nearly 3 months later.
Use Toyota website to see what is available by you it shows what is in stock and transit very clearly.

I am in Michigan & wanted this spec: Everest Green ORP (Non-Hybrid) with the upgraded TRD wheels. Luckily May of last year a Toyota dealer, 1-Hour north of me had the exact spec incoming. It was "up for grabs" so I immediately placed a $1k (refundable) deposit & got my 2023 Lexus IS500 appraised. A month later in June I took delivery with my trade-in.

Yea they are all refundable until you want it back and have to fight them to get it. If you can deal with that then all good with a deposit. I’ll never give them one but maybe I just have a better selection as I have about 4 dealers within an hour of me so calling every week worked out

I don't know anything about production capacity on 4Runners, but Toyota's been selling a quarter million Tacos a year for a while now, so it makes sense that you'll see more of them on the dealer lots.

I put a deposit on mine right after it was built, because there weren't any around in the spec I wanted. It's likely a lot of these are getting snatched up before they even get to dealers. Good luck tho.

My dealer put it in writing that the deposit is refundable and they also have a great reputation. I have put down deposits in the past with other dealers and I did cancel the order and I never had a problem getting it back from any dealer I ever dealt with.

I have a deposit on an everest orp non hybrid and have been checking this spreadsheet I found posted here. No idea how accurate it really is but you can see whats actually in stock, what has dealer hold/presold, etc. My unit did seem to update yesterday with a delivery window Jun 18- July 1

I watched mine and when the dealer showed the delivery date, it was pretty much spot on. Then I saw on the dealer site and it showed in stock. I got a call an hour later from them telling me it’s in.

Did the dealer website have one date or a window like I mentioned?
