Anyone who has upsized tires running a skinnier spare?

I recently put on 285/75r17 Toyo AT3s on my ORP, and want to get a spare that has the same diameter, but if I get a complete match, it will hang down very low and reduce departure angle and frankly looks like a full diaper. Also not going full rear bumper/swingout. Considering just removing the spare all together and keeping some slime/liquid patch in the truck but I don't love that especially if offroad.

I am considering getting a 34X10.5R17 to keep the diameter, but reduce width. My OCD hates that it wont be a full match. But this is just... a dumb design choice by toyota to accommodate the useless 3rd row (or the hybrid battery) IMO.

Anyone else dealing with this dilemma? What did you go with?

The skinniest 34-inch all-terrain tire is the Interco Narrow SS TSL (34×9.50-15). It has a section width of only 9.5 inches, though it is technically classified as a mud-terrain tire rather than an all-terrain. [1, 2]
If you require a strict all-terrain tire, you have a couple of extremely narrow 34-inch options depending on your wheel size:

• Toyo Open Country A/T III in 34×10.50R17 (10.6-inch section width)
• BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 in 34×10.50R17 (10.6-inch section width) [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

A common trick is to air it down to 10psi or so, which will shrink it somewhat.

Just be sure to carry a 12v air compressor!

I have run 285/70/17's for the past 100k miles and use a 255/75/17 spare, this is a 2015 5th gen. The spare is the same KO3 and an E load so should handle any rough terrain if I get a flat on the trail.

I also didn't want the wider tire hanging lower underneath. The 285/70 vs the 255/75 has a .6 inch diameter difference, .3 inch radius. But since the spare doesn't get rotated in the spare is actually within the diameter spec for more of the tire life of the 4 tires. Luckily I haven't needed the spare in the first 190k miles and don't plan to use it in the future. My theory seems to work on an Excel document and the tire shop didn't disagree with my thinking but I'm sure someone out there won't like it. My mathing seems to think the spare is within spec once the 285's get down to about 10-11/32nds of an inch.

With a 285/75/17 you could do something similar and get a 255/80/17,

Ok I think I am going to run an AT3 in 34 X10.50R17 LT on a matching wheel. I would prefer a steelie to save some money and weight, but I can't find one that has a comparable offset. Only .3" wider than the stock spare, and .4" smaller diameter than my fullsize 285/75r17s.

Didn’t puncture it (285/75/17), but I sure drug it…lol. Love the full diaper analogy…

I have a 3rd row and swear it doesn’t hang as low as the hybrids. I believe only the hybrids have a lower placement

a smaller diameter spare is still useful, it will allow you to drive slowly someplace
where you might be able to fix it. but be in 2wd and do not go far or fast, the diff
will be getting hotter than normal with mismatch diameters
