thats about right. 16 gals with 3 gal margin (20%)

typically toyota keeps 10%-20% in reserve depending on size of gas tank. its to ensure you dont run out of gas and also to keep the fuel pump from over heating and burning out prematurely.

These things aren't designed to be efficient, just as efficient as they "can be" with regard to their size/driving dynamics. I've been getting 320-350/tank with a roughly 40c/60h ratio. The displayed range is probably using your last tank mpg as a marker for the new tank.

The pilot is a smidge more streamlined and has different gearing.

switch to TRIP average mpg, NOT total. you are getting the 21 + mpg advertised.

To be fair I have been using it mainly for city driving. So far I have about 18.5 mpg average so that will skew the results for sure.
What mode are you in with getting 18.5 mpg?

When I tow my boat and forget to switch back to ECO mode, I get around 18 but when I remember to switch back to ECO (after a towing event) I get 22 - 23 MPG. I have a TRD Sport Premium (non-hybrid).

I never use ECO mode. Only Normal and occasionally Sport mode to do an Italian Tune Up, (officer) Vroooom. Go fast to blow out any carbon buildup.

FYi, the 4r has D-4ST which combines both port and direct injection so you should be good with normal driving for carbon buildup.

And just remember the estimated miles on tank will be calculated on your last real time MPG. So if you were driving in a situation where you were getting poor MPG, the computer will estimate based on that number. It’s why people get different estimates on fill up.
Yes, I get that but I took a recent 100 mile trip, got 24.5 MPG then when I filled up the next day, the meter read 232 miles to empty. That makes zero sense. Taking a 200 mile one way trip tomorrow then buy gas. Should be interesting what is says next.

I just drove 550 miles one way towing my 3,500 # boat at 70 MPH. Got 11-12 MPG at best. I used Tow/Haul all the time. I actually think that this is the culprit that reduces my mileage but I know I am supposed to use it, right? Any thoughts?

All I can say is I never reset my trip odometers, I have driven the truck 7k miles, I get 20.7 mpg and every time I fill up it says 347 to empty. And when the light comes on and you fill it up it usually takes around 15-17 gallons, which means they are hiding a couple gallons. I personally have moved on from caring about MPG at this point.

You're correct, our '25 Hybrid 4Runner shows 383-386 till empty and gets 23.5 average all the time, 7k miles on the ODO. The '25 Tacoma Hybrid shows 223-232 and gets 19-20 without towing but it towed about 4k miles this summer getting around 10MPG with over 10k miles on the ODO.

I wonder if I made the correct decision to buy the non-hybrid model as I am retired and plan to tow good distances for fishing trips from now on. After all, it is still just a small 4 cylinder engine and I wonder if it can take this strain over the coming years. My 5th Gen V6 was just ok, but anything over 65 MPH, and it downshifted to 4th gear, and stayed there. I have the TRD Sport Premium, 4WD model with 4K on it now. Don’t expect great mileage but didn’t expect 11-12 MPG, as after about 150 miles, I need to start looking for gas as the tank is small as we know.

Just curious if that 232 was before you put the car in gear. Its about what I would expect to be the DTE after 100 miles on the highway. Once you put the car in gear that number would jump up to reflect the new DTE (330 ish). Even though the fuel gage reads full, the DTE does not adjust until the car is in gear and moves. Or maybe the computer got confused....

Actually, when I put it in gear and pulled out of the gas station, it doesn’t show anything for a few seconds, then the number appears so I was already moving. Curious what makes it know that the tank has been filled up actually. I’m Miss something I’m sure. Lots to learn on this new vehicle.

Well, it knows because of the sensor in the fuel tank that provides the information for the digital fuel gauge on the dash. But this does not explain having such a low DTE after your 100 miles at 24MPG. I thought for sure I had figured out the issue but .... now I'm stumped.
