Rolled off the lot last month with a brand new ORP. Less than 2 miles on it. I'm at 1300 miles and already changed the oil once. Plan to change it again at 2k and again at 5k.

My problem is that I was modifying the settings on my gauge cluster and found the location to "reset oil life." But it appears I can't set my oil change interval. It appears to be locked at Toyotas recommended 10k interval. I don't care about setting it to 1500 or 3000 miles during the break in period.

I care about being able to set it to 5k miles once I've owned it for a bit longer and not paying constant attention to the odometer. I refuse to run oil for 10,000 miles between changes. My 20 year old Jeep allowed me to choose an oil change interval.

Your telling me a brand new vehicle in 2025 won't let me choose my oil change intervals?

There's got to be a way to change this. I hope maybe I'm just missing it.

If you get a quality oil, 10,000 miles is absolutely fine. I will not run 0W-20 in mine, it's getting 5W-30 Liquimoly at her first oil change. I'll change it at 1000 miles, roughly, then I'll do one yearly as I don't quite drive 10,000 miles a year. But modern oils can easily last that long. The days of 3000 mile changes are long over.

Watching. I will also will be doing 5K changes. After researching I'm sticking with 0w20, especially since I live in a colder climate) but there are obviously lots of opinions vs 5w30. I'm also planning to use OEM filters even though I'm torn on using OEM filters with higher flow but less filtration vs one with higher filtration and less flow. Way more complicated than it should be to find the best engineering data for putting oil in your particular engine.

In the end, it seems changing the oil more frequently is the most important factor for engine life which is why 5000 miles will be my interval (3K seems to provide little additional benefit but 10K seems to add some real risk that is easy to avoid).

But back to the question of customizing the oil change interval, my guess is that we can't do it (hope I'm wrong). On the other hand, sticking with 5K intervals will be pretty easy to keep track of manually so it's not a big deal either way to me.

if you stick with the 5k interval, it will align with the toyota programmed 5k tire rotation schedule.

at 500 miles prior to every 5k miles you will get a notification on your mid screen

Oil lasting 10,000 miles is not the issue. It's the contaminants within the oil on 10,000 mile intervals that's the problem.

Do 10k oil changes if you want, but I would highly advise against it.

I'd also urge you to research it further before you recommend it to other people.
