Hard transmission shift on initial startup under 1k Miles

It may go away or it may not. Mine still does it at 10,500 miles. One single slightly-hard shift between first and second and then it won't do it again until the next morning.

I also have the clunky shifting feeling mentioned a couple of times in this thread while semi-hard braking. Not hard-hard braking, but slightly harder than normal. It feels like a combination of engine braking and downshifting, the hybrid clutch engaging to recharge the hybrid battery, followed by the engine cutting off. It feels like they attempted to program all these processes to make it feel like a smooth and normal braking experience but missed the mark. I'm betting this is something that non-hybrid owners aren't experiencing because I'm thinking it mostly has to do with the hybrid clutch engaging to recharge the battery.

Let it warm up for 5-10 minutes. I do that every day, and I have never had a shifting issue. Also, it is good for the turbo to let the oil warm up.

Ok so now based on this thread, I stopped babying it.

and it's gone.

It has learned and it doesn't thump anymore. the first shift is smooth now and behaves

I'm curious what this means? Like you just jump on the gas and go, and don't let it thump between 1 and 2?

I too have this problem between 1-2 gear in my 26 ORP. About 800 miles.

I don't understand people buying a new vehicle and the first thing they do is get out on the highway and cruise at 80mph in 90º heat. All vehicles need to be broken in properly. I do the basic first 1000 miles at moderate speed, not over 65mph, and no jack rabbit starts. I also remotely start the vehicle every morning before I leave at 6:30 am. That is good for the turbo and transmission, especially in winter.

I am not telling you what to do, but telling you all what I do.

Nice to see this thread is back. I had/have this same issue. Asked the dealer to address it, and they told me they couldn't replicate it. Hasn't really been a problem past being a very minor annoyance, but something tells me this is fairly normal.

Hello, new Trailhunter owner here. Three weeks old. I just started noticing all the same things everyones talking about. Herky Jerky shift from 1st to 2nd when cold and then the downshift issue when I come to a stop at a stop light. First time it happened I actually thought someone maybe bumped into me from behind! But my camera confirmed that wasn’t the case. I only have 500 miles on it and hope things smooth out, but at least it’s a known issue and not just me.

I have just over 3200 miles on my Trailhunter and it's been doing that since day 1. My online/forum research indicates that it's a normal characteristic and I haven't' bothered to take it into the dealership to get looked at.

Thanks for the information, I’ll try to destress! I expected much more from Toyota.

Tomorrow, at the cold start of the day, I am going to try and shift the gears manually just for the hell of it to see how it feels. I’m sure it will be smooth as it appears the problem is the automatic part of the equation.

You're welcome. I hope Toyota comes out with a software update or something to address it.

The Old Ladys 25 LC has been doing it since she got it new.
My 4R does it as well.
So if its an "issue" it not a 4R thing but appears to be a Toyota thing

Mine has done this since I’ve had it, the first couple of shifts from 1-2 when cold and then it smooths out.
It was getting significantly better the more driving I did but after coming back from towing our camper using tow/haul mode the symptoms started all over again and then got better with more mileage.
I noticed this behavior changes after being in a different driving mode. If I pick a mode and stay in eco, normal or sport for a week the behavior gets better and gradually goes away until I start switching modes again. It seems to relearn the 1-2 shift points and is only prominent when cold and the first shifts of the day.
Maybe it is a software issue Toyota automatic transmissions use an adaptive learning strategy through the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to track driving habits, adjust shift points, and compensate for component wear over time.

Interesting. Makes one long for the good old days of the standard four on the floor. Keep it simple!

Same here with our LC and 4R.
Our driveway has a decent grade, and we back out, so I just assumed that was contributing.
Since other have the issue as well, I doubt its the driveway now.
Im going to try the other drive modes like posted above and check those out as well.
