Owners Manual says no snow chains on 265/70R18 tires. Anyone use cables that will work without damaging?

Owners Manual Pg 442 says "Tire chains cannot be mounted on 265/70R18 tires"

What about cables that won't cause damage or have clearance issues? Anyone know?

I've always used the low profile cable chains from Security Chain Company (SCC). They are designed to work in tight clearance situations, and install with no looseness or play. Had them on my 5th Gen 4Runner and they've always worked great — never any damage!

For the 265/70/R18 tires, you would use their Super Z6 (Model SZ451) chains:

Addressed this issue a few days ago.

Took our TRD Off Rd Premium in to my trusted tire shop. Employee brought out the set pictured and test fitted the pair. Both of us on hands and knees could not identify any conflict with the body or suspension components so I sacked them up. Ignore the 4Runner label in the photo. I label all our chains to simplify things. These are from Laclede Chain.

Same for me as well with the SCC, there’s more than enough clearance for them. Doubt I’ll ever need them (didn’t in my Tacoma) but carry them just in case.

Peerless has purchased SCC. I looked up the cables for 265/70R18 on their website. ZT751 Z SUV/LT would also work.

I've used cable chains in the past and found they didn't work as well as real chains. If you are worried you could just use them on the rear. If you have the locking diff they will work very well (I assume that the locking diff only activates when in low range). I'm sure the warning not to use them is because if you compress the suspension all the way they could rub. In reality the chances of anyone doing that is almost zero. After all, it's not like you are going to be jumping your 4Runner with chains on.

WTF? They design a vehicle intended for harsh/winter conditions and then they tell you you can't use chains on the tires? That's outrageous!

Carrying (usable) chains is required by law in Oregon in most mountain areas all winter. With a 4WD vehicle and M+S tires you rarely need to actually deploy them, and traction (3PMSF) tires can be substituted for chains most of the time. There are, however, occasionally severe conditions where chains are required on ALL vehicles regardless of tires or anything else. Notably when accessing the Timberline ski area on Mount Hood in a snowstorm.

So Toyota is essentially telling me I cannot drive my super duper off-road vehicle in winter. Give me a break.

So I went to our local Les Schwab Tire Center. They essentially refused to sell me any chains for the 4Runner. They said that snow socks would be the only thing that would fit. I suspect that they were angling to sell me 3PMSF tires.

As mentioned above, The SCC chains fit just fine on the 4Runner. I’d get some winter tires anyway, you will never need to actually put any chains on then.

Fellow Oregon snowboarder here. ;)

I purchased chains for our 4Runner at our local Les Schwab a week or so ago. We test fitted them in the parking lot. Looked good so I picked them up. Test fitted them again at home and gave them a thorough look from every angle. Could not see any issue. They also mentioned tire socks.

Interesting. I must come off as a mark. I went later also to Discount Tire, and they likewise tried to sell me winter tires. No chains. So I'll have to either buy them on-line or bite the bullet and get 3PMSF tires. The socks seem like a joke. How on earth do they significantly improve traction when they cover the tire tread with more or less slick fabric?
