Rear Liftgate Not Responding to Fob, Buttons, or Foot Sensor

Has anyone had issues with the rear hatch? Mine suddenly won't open or close on its own anymore. I get two quick beeps, but nothing happens when I use the foot sensor, key fob, rear hatch button, or the console button unless I manually start lifting or closing it myself. The hatch still locks normally.Any suggestions on what might be causing this or how to fix?

Likely issue is that the window is down - even just a bit will prevent the motor from engaging.

i personally keep the window lock out button pressed in. that way no one but myself can roll a window up/down without my knowledge.

the driver controls for all windows works regardless if the window lock button is engaged.

only exception is the rear hatch window. the window lock button over rides the overhead button so you have to unlock the master window lock button to roll down the window from inside or outside.

the regular window buttons on the drivers door handle ignore the master lock button, but passenger window buttons are over ridden by the master lock button.

its wonky on application, the 4 windows vs the rear hatch work opposite of each other depending on the master lock button, should be all the same.

It wasn’t the window. I was having problems with the window up, wipers worked fine. I disconnected the battery and reconnected after 5 mins and the issue is resolved for whatever reason. Maybe this will help someone else.

I’ve always had problems with the rear hatch opening using the foot motion. Works about one out of 10 times. No other issues using the buttons or remote.

I have had this happen, but I think I have figured out the cause, at least on closing. I think it is very sensitive to the position of the key fob. If I try closing it with the key in my pocket away from the door it often does as you describe. If I make sure the key is more toward the door it seems to work reliably. I am not sure why that would be--for that matter why it even cares if the key fob is anywhere close to *close* the door.

Now I just have to find/make a hard case for my key fob to prevent the stupid button from getting pressed while in my pocket. I have had that happen too many times--a couple times coming out of a business and finding the hatch wide open in the parking lot. Not cool. Yes, it can be disabled...but for some stupid reason only by the dealer (probably Carista as well but I have not bothered with that). I did try a silicone cover for it per someone's suggestion, which I did not think would help much...and indeed it did not help much.

I’ve given up on the foot sensor. In the year I’ve had my 4Runner I think I’ve gotten to open 3 times

I have gotten more used to it. Kick at the "e" in 4Runner. Fairly quick kick (less than one second I think), do not actually kick the bumper. The latter 2 are from the user manual.

I never use the kick function but it sure like's to work when loading or unloading all by itself...

It happens to me when I keep the hatch open for long durations. Sometimes days together in my garage. This is what I do and it works every single time. Slowly push it down to force close. Then it starts working again, as of nothing ever happened.

In case you are not aware...if you *really* do not like the kick sensor, or simply never want to use it, you can disable that in settings. I do find it useful though on occasion.

I've got no patience for this kind of fiddly stuff. I would just drive it in and say I want a service manager to show me how to work these features.

What did you do when you bough it? Every car I have bought and the car my parents bought they offered to show you how to use all the features. How to use your car in NOT a service thing. Maybe you need to go back to sales and say I need help with features.
