Fortunately (not) I have the OEM mud guards with the stupid lip at the bottom. It collects ENOUGH mud for me.

Thanks!
i think your expectation of a spotless dirt free WHITE 4runner are misguided. Mud, dirty rain water drips occur on any vehicle...
Did you even look at the 4runner before you bought it???
Those vents are the first thing i noticed, said to wife nice mud catchers. But ive yet to catch anything or pack it with mud...if you do pack it with mud your fixing your bumper and the vent is the least of your worries...
Does dirty rain water look like complete trash on a white vehicle well YES, YEs it does....Thats why i buy black or dark grey vehicles.

This is my 4th 4Runner and the second one that is the pearly white. The previous two were dark green annd silver respectively And of course I saw this one since I special ordered it. Black vehicles show dirt and dust much worse that white vehicles. That's why all of the company truck were white. When I'm playing, I don't mind mud and dirt. But if I'm in town or on a gravel road after a rain, the dirt and mud drooling out of those vents on an otherwise clean car bothered me. The vent plugs took care of the issue.

Style, of course! It's more for "looks" than function. Just spray it down & move on. Don't over think it.

You know? That's probably why people have a choice of colors for their vehicle. Rain on a dusty black rig looks worse. But, we have our choice.

I read somewhere or maybe a video, that they direct air into the wheel tub and help with brake cooling. ???

Possibly, but you would think with that air directly hitting a large chunk of rubber going in the opposite direction, it wouldnt make it to the brakes

I’m not a fluid mechanics or aerodynamic engineer, but I think moving the passing air in front of the tire likely causes turbulence in the wheel well that could reach the brakes But maybe Toyota spent the money to fabricate those openings because they think it looks cool.

Or cost less
"Weight" savings
.0009 MPG increase for EPA
Etc.

normally if you are feeding brakes fresh air you usually feed the air to the inside of the wheel where its closer to the brake hardware.

if you watch Cd video's the airstream passing by the tire wheel well on the outside is usually smooth air flow. i mean its still a brick thru air at .36 Cd.

compared to a 2025 rav4 at .34 Cd or the new sequoia at .35 Cd (down from .36)

funny part is the 2025 LC250 has a Cd of .35 (how a box has a better Cd than the 4R is funny)

a bunch of Toyotas
those cutouts are for MPG increasing aerodynamics. yes it is a design choice or styling point but the purpose is the ability to have bulging fenders and fender flares, but also increase MPG a little bit (reduce the loss of mpg due to the front-butt booty)

Yeah for a white basic looking work truck always blows my mind.
There is a study of who/what type of people purchase white automobiles....Lets just say white vehicle owners are not the most fun people to be around.
There is a reason no sane person paints a show car white....lacks depths, shine and special type of person to care for the finish.
As for black paint maintenance, I still own a my 5th black 1/2 ton truck along with this underground 4runner, maybe its me but i treat underground same as black paint.
Rain or dust just means get out there and wash your ride you bum.
Black ALWAYS looks better than white because you know what is under that dirt.
Sure its not a lazy mans color to maintain, but its always so satisfying when that black car is washed and dried and the sun hits it...💪💪🔥
That's the difference between white car owners and black car owners, not to mention once again the latter are much more fun people to be around....😁
Coming from someone who's owned nothing but black vehicles for 33yrs
