Who's had their 6th gen for a year now? What do you love/hate?

CONS:
- Lane Assist is bad...over steers / swerves you back in
- Cramped back seat but kids dont mind
- Constant carplay drop connectivity (didn't happen before until I updated the OS.... could be phone more than car)
- weird clunk in drivetrain when doing slight acceleration and braking in stop and go traffic... Could be a normal truck behavior
- hard shift in the morning then disappears

The built-in Navigation is a big turd. Why does my next turn need to take up 1/4 of my screen? Why does setting the orientation to North-Up (my preference) get reset to default constantly. These 2 main issues is why I can't use the built in Nav - way too frustrating. Yes, I just use Apple Play, which works well. Coming from a 2024 Colorado, Chevy beat the pants off Toyota on the infotainment. Too bad the Chevy was a rattling bucket of failures only 30k miles in...

In general, the digital dash and infotainment needs a lot of work. It could be showing so much more useful information when towing, offroading, etc. with some OTA updates...

One con for me is the HVAC system is LOUD. Fan noise coming through the vents seems to make a noise unlike any other vehicle I have owned.
Anyone else experience this?

I really, really dislike the way the rear seats fold down. Sleeping in the back is a lot more uncomfortable then previous generations.
I disabled the parking brake assist, and I hate that it reminds me of this every time I start the engine.
I also dislike the way the engine sounds at idle going through a drive-through.

I've owned my 25 ORP Hybrid for 3 1/2 months but already put on 7,000 miles. Have done some great trips with it. Overall I love it. Powerful, comfortable, like the safety features and adaptive cruise control. It feels like a driving a truck, if you want a smother ride, buy a Landcruiser or other SUV. I love driving it. Gas mileage is pretty good even when towing a small trailer. A great looking vehicle.

It does have some minor cons: door cup holders are a joke. Too many warning alarms. Back seats folding not going flat. A huge screen, but besides maps apps (which is fantastic), Toyota doesn't use the size at all for other screens. Poor mileage tracking on the trip counters. This is lazy software programming not to use such a great feature that we paid for.

I did PPF on the sides, front, and partial hood. So I've bashed thru bushes and not a scratch . My 83 Toyota SR5 pickup had weak paint.

Pros:
Love the powertrain. The turbo 4 has so much more "get up and go" than the old V6.
Handling. Road manners are much nicer than the 5th Gen.
Infotainment - I don't have any issues with the infotainment system. Previous Tacoma didn't have android auto/carplay. I have also not had any connection issues.

Cons:
Paint - I can't seem to win with Toyota paint. 2012 Tacoma (white) had the paint flaking issue. New 4Runner paint seems soft and easily marks.

- lane assist useless in straight lines (keep your hands on the wheel! they are!)

The only thing I really don't like is the noise that the windshield wiper motor makes. Living in the PNW the wipers get plenty of use...

Still not sure how I feel about the tucked in rock sliders, wife could really use step sliders to help get in. Same about the lack of sunroof, haven't purchased a new vehicle without it since the Clinton era...

I'm 5'6" and I found that I was actually using the OEM aluminum running boards, so when it was time to order sliders (I'm doing an off-road build), I opted for step-style cali raised sliders with a kick out! Your wife would probably like step sliders.

Loves: The 4x4 capability, everest green paint

Likes: The non-hybrid i4 turbo is pretty nice! The interior is actually quite nice. I got the non-premium trim because I hate ipad style displays and I was being cheap. I covered the inside with tuxmax mats and fake leather black seat covers, and now I'm really liking the interior. I also like having anti collision beeping, but no 360 camera, I personally find 360 cameras super distracting and I prefer to look outside my vehicle 100% when maneuvering (except for reverse, rear view camera is obviously nice). I have my shotgun be my spotter for offroad obstacles.

Dislike: the paint is so soft, I've already had to fill chips, and it pinstripes so easily from the trails. I have the TSB reverse break squeak but I don't care enough about that to set up an appointment for it. I'll talk to toyota about it when I have my complementary service.

Hate: the lane control safety feature thing where the truck tries to steer for you. I disabled this.

I have had my ORP Hybrid a year now and have very few complaints. Drives great, comfortable, plenty of power. I have found that I like most of the safety features, including lane-departure control and others. I just re-enabled one--I think it is called PKSB or something like that? It starts slowing the vehicle down if I approach another too close, not in cruise control. After getting used to it (did not take long, maybe a day or so) I rather like it most of the time--occasionally it slows me a bit when not absolutely needed (such as on a curve and I think it detects parked vehicles or other things) but that is minor, and errs on safety anyway. I like that it gives me an active warning--that is, it starts slowing rather than just beeping.

I am not sure of the paint yet--mine is still in good shape, but do have a very minor chip or 2 at the door edge. Might be that any paint would have suffered that though. The rest is fine.

I have had no problems with the glass. Entertainment system is overall very good. Once in a while Android Auto does not connect, but a manual reconnect always works so not a big deal (could be the phone end).

I love the cameras...makes backing up easy. Love the pedestrian/vehicle detection, especially when backing out of a parking space, as it can detect things before I can possibly see them. Nice to have the low bumper and side views when off-road.

Dislikes:

Less vertical space in the back because of the hybrid. Yes, I knew that coming in and chose to accept it. Does not mean I have to like it! I like the power and improved mileage of the hybrid (I regularly get 23.5-24 MPG).

The way the seats fold. Folded with the back flat is not too bad but not great. Tumbled to the back of the front seats they are still really in the way, although it does give a bit more length in the back.

The one thing I do really hate: 8 beeps that tell me I have the key in my pocket when I shut a door. Toyota says never leave the key inside the car, yet they warn you when you don't. This is always when I am getting out to check mail, open a gate, or something similar. I will not forget the car is on. Plus it could at least be smarter, in that it need not beep when I shut one door when another is still open. Thankfully I do not have neighbors close by, but if I did it could be annoying late at night. And as far as I have been able to tell, it is not possible to turn that one off.

Is there a particular color paint which is more prone for problems? I've read that white paint was the worst in Tacoma forum.

Mine is underground, (Trailhunter) had it ceramic coated but the paint is so thin it shows swirl marks easily. Thinking about having a Pro paint shop paint it the same color with higher quality paint eventually.

Pros:

Still seems built for 4Runner reliability (I drove my previous gen 3 for 21 years). Any non-Toyota options were dismissed due to long term reliability concerns. Plus anything with a removable top (Jeep or Bronco) were a no-go due to noise at freeway speeds. It was 4R, Land Cruiser or GX 550 for me and I liked the 4R best. I wanted a blend of practical but also fun at this point in my life.

Power is good. Fuel economy is a bit better than 5th gen. Overall performance and tech improvements over the 5th gen were worth going with the 6th gen.

No attention monitor on the steering wheel (I hate this because I drive with one hand at 12 o'clock). This was a turn-off for the GX 550. Maybe you can turn this off and still use adaptive cruise but it doesn't work on my wife's vehicle so this is a negative "upgrade" for me.

No rattles or build quality issues for me. Paint quality is a concern but too early to tell. I would blame politicians for paint quality more than Toyota though. I did a full front wrap to help.

Capability and Fun...lots of toys to play with. A decent number of gauge custom views (better than my wife's Explorer). 33" stock tires. The hybrid is fun (new for me). All the 4WD modes, cameras, disconnecting sway bar, locking rear diff, 4lo, light bar, etc are just fun (I have the Pro with extra goodies). I just took it off-road in sand dunes and it was a lot of fun! Very capable.

Practical. Reliable (hopefully). Good size for me. Hauls my bike and gear for backpacking, climbing, skiing, etc to sometimes 4WD locations easily. Enjoyable to daily drive. Tech works well for me (no connection issues) and the upgrades like wireless car play, screen, cameras, etc are really nice. For me the tech is better than my wife's work 2025 Explorer Platinum even though Ford is usually a lot better with tech than Toyota. Rear power window for fun and hauling long things.

Cons

No major ones. Most are nitpicking.

The big ones are non-sliding rear seats with very tight space. I would have much rather had a few more inches of rear seat room and a few less in the cargo area.

I would have preferred a more powerful battery chemistry that actually helped improve MPG even if winter performance was worse. The current battery is small, heavy and weak but I still like it and the idea. A few more MPG would have been great.

Power is great but I still feel like the 4cylinder engine is working a bit too hard at speeds 70mph or higher. As long as it holds up (and I have faith that Toyota took great care to do so as their future business depends on it), this will be fine.

I would like to have both average and trip mpg displayed but have to select one. Toyota could have used the screens for a lot more than they did.

Rear spoiler (underneath holds a lot of water and road grime. Rear overall gets really dirty quickly.

Too many gimmicky things. I have the fake hood scoop which looks nice but I dislike fake things like that. Fake screw designs on the plastic knob rings. Just silly. I'm not sure I'll ever use the detachable speaker.

Overall, I like it at lot. As long as it's reliable I'll be happy. If it has a lot of reliability issues, it will be my last 4Runner.

One more complaint on the excessive beeping. If you put it on jack stands and in neutral so you can rotate the rear driveshaft for lubricating the zerk fittings, the vehicle alarms the whole time. If anyone knows how to turn this off, please let me know! I couldn't find any way to change this even with Carista.

I also wish we had a "bike or hitch attachment" setting to automatically turn off the rear safety stuff when putting a hitch bike rack (or luggage carrier) on. It's a pain to go into the menus each time I go biking. I just leave it on most of the warm months instead but it makes fitting in the garage a bit tight.

3.0 ride assist will kill you on a slipery road.

I've owned mine for almost a year now, just turned 15K miles. Absolutely no regrets on the purchase (other than the price).
Minor nits:
Lane Departure Assist - I've turned it off.
Lane Tracing Assist - its fine other than it doesnt sense when my hands are just resting on the wheel so it warns me too often.
How the sensors deal with a bike rack. PITA
The gas door iced up a number of times this past winter.
Just noticed how pitted my windshield is.
The folding of the back seats obviously.
The button to open the power lift gate has to be held for more than just a push.

Other than that I really love it.
