Transmission slip (?) when taking off from a slight roll.

Good day all! Been having this issue, wonder if anyone can provide some guidance with my new 2026 ORP.

I’m at about 1000kms.. Babied it a bit for the first 3-400kms.. less since..

I notice that from a complete standstill, the tranny will start from first and run through the gears normally. But let’s say i slightly roll a stop, even ever so slightly.. it seems like the tranny never goes back into first, stays in 2nd or 3rd and slips the torque converter until the gear finally fully engages and then acceleration is normal again.

Is this normal behaviour with these transmissions? Sometimes the slip is quite excessive. Almost feels like a cvt (barf).

I believe it is the "self-learning" part of the transmission. I'm not a huge fan of it tbh but I definitely feel it a ton. Sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed when my friends with a Stellantis Durango has a smoother shifting trans lmao

I just picked mine up today and I felt the same thing right away. I’m going to have service look at it next week. Doesn’t feel right. Do you guys have an update since June?

I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the normal behaviour for this transmission. I’ve driven a few others and they all seem to drive this way.

Good insight. Come to think about, when I drove a Land Cruiser 6 months ago I felt a similar behavior, but I assumed it had to do with the hybrid system. I still plan to get confirmation from service if I can.

If, and most likely, this is done by design; I get the strategy. You’re driving 15MPH, transmission is still in second gear. The transmission can either shift to first, and potentially the user at that point can feel a hard shift. Or allow the torque converter to slip a bit to increase the RPM to get more power to the wheels. Yes you are not transferring all the power, the engine is making, to the wheels at that instant; but it’s still more power than a condition with a fully locked torque converter at let’s say 1000RPM on second gear.

Again if this is done by design, Toyota needs to train their service techs and even sales people to help explain this new behavior to the end user. I am guessing that most people won’t even notice this, but some old timers like myself that know how a clutch slipping feels like, might flag this as a malfunction.

lastly, I don’t want the torque converter to slip while I’m towing a trailer especially if I’m going uphill. I’m hoping “Tow Haul” mode has a different shift strategy. If it ends up behaving the same way, I plan to shift manually during low speed conditions, such as stop and go traffic and low speed uphill roads.

Oh it just occurred to me, we can try one test to help confirm this. Drive the same speed at which I experience the “CVT” behavior, shift it to manual and apply the gas a bit and observe. It’s possible that the initial selected gear could be too high and there will be almost no power available. Then down shift one gear and observe again. I’m guessing we won’t experience the “CVT” behavior during this test. I will report back my findings.

Also another observation is that this behavior never occurs at higher speeds and higher gears. If there the transmission is misbehaving maybe I would see the issue occur at different gears? Not sure. Just a thought.

Can confirm that tow/haul mode has a completely different trans behaviour and mapping. It will shift down to first even at a slow roll. I’m also convinced the throttle mapping is way more aggressive in that mode. Truck hauls ass in tow mode.
