Sound deadening insulation project

Phase II
I did not do a sound check prior to doing the rear. After the completion of that, it made everything forward and from the sides sound more noticeable. I did use a mobile app decibel app moving forward to verify results.
Passenger side footwell. Styrofoam in the footwell. Looks like some sound deadening under the center console. I think I might leave that alone, pulling of the center console.

I agree with you. The wiper motors are very loud! This is one of the few complaints I have about it.

This is what the drivers side looks like. I don’t know what Toyota was thinking, putting the amp under the carpet. I made an executive decision and cut a hole in the carpet. Not 100% done with reassembly, but, started the truck and revved the engine. It doesn’t sound like the engine is on your lap anymore. I will take some sound levels at speed, tomorrow.

When you had the back hatch area apart, did you find a location for the rear hatch alarm speaker? The one that beeps a warning every time you open and close the rear hatch?

What foam did you use and where did you get it from? Also so far how much material did you use? Seems like over 100sq ft for the Amazon mats and foam. Nice work though! Did you also do the rear hatch as the hatch sounds very tiny. Thats the one thing I noticed when first driving my 4runner, is how much noise and resonance comes from the rear.

Rolls are a pain to work with in certain situations, but, work well for big runs where there aren’t a lot of obstacles and compound body surfaces. I did one previous vehicle. There is a learning curve and you will need to learn how to manipulate the material and what its limitations are. I used a combination of roller, panel removal tools and a paddle like the ones A/C guys use on foil tape to bed down the butyl deadening. The foam just lays down with your hand. With both the foam and butyl, just peel off a little backing paper at a time and take your time when it comes to dealing with a lot of compound surfaces.With the foam, you want to think about what and where you are placing it. You don’t want to lay to much because it might interfere with reassembly.

I used SoundSkinz on the doors. I used one sheet of butyl on the inside of each door and put foam behind each speaker. It made a remarkable difference in sound quality. These are custom cut for the 6 Gen

That is probably outside the vehicle somewhere or under the hood

The foam is what kills the most sound transmission. A lot of underhood noise was coming from the grommet/bulkhead where the steering shaft comes through the firewall. It sounds like the engine is on your lap. I put about three layers over it. It made a huge difference.
