Something I’ve noticed during first few min of startup

I’ve had my 4Runner for about a year now. My cold start routine is to let the cat idol for about 30 sec until it drops to 1k rpm. The thing I’ve noticed is the turbo won’t kick in until I’ve hit about 1/8 to 1/4 mile away. Instead my car will use the battery for extra power during that time. So my questions are

1. Do non hybrid cars act this way too?

2. Could the battery compensate for the turbo if it goes out?

3. Do you guys notice this behavior?

Coming from the WRX, I am used to trying to not engage boost until the oil temp is up near 175, so I haven't really noticed as I tend to baby it when just getting going anyway.

lol you people. i put in gear and just go. when its -20F i am not waiting for 10-20min to things to warm up. it was fine for my 2014 limited for 12 yrs and it was fine for the 25 platinum this past winter.

Same thing happens in my ORP Hybrid. I assumed it's trying to let things circulate and warm up before supplying boost unless demanded via high throttle input.

I've noticed this in my Trailhunter as well. My assumption is that the computer does this to allow time for the oil to warm up so it's safer on the turbo. I'm curious how Toyota achieved this, since turbos are exhaust driven. My guess is that there is a restrictor plate that's allowing the exhaust gases to bypass the turbo.

It probably just holds the wastegate open until conditions are favorable.

all Toyota have ECU and TCU logic to not allow max power or torque until temps reach a specific threshold. Some have yellow warning indicators on the dash letting you know it is
in warmup mode (yaris won't allow top gear until warmed up)

so yeah let it do it's thing from cold starts.

Only worry about your ECU or TCU if you are in closed-loop OBDII mode [emissions ready]
and then things start behaving weird. [Ready] in the OBDII emissions means everything is
at temp by that time.
