Remote Start inconsistent?

i have the ORP and I use the app to remote start the 4Runner. When I try to use the FOB to remote start it doesn’t work at all. What gives? Remote start only works via app for my vehicle??

The key fob sucks. I just have to use the app to ensure it starts. Even 5 feet away the key fob is inconsistent when pressing the lock

Another annoyance is having to manually connect to Apple Play after a remote start.

Learned this in another thread: After remote start with the App and then brake/start button in the car for ready to drive, CarPlay won't be enabled and you can't enable it in the settings in the MultiMedia System. Fix: Hold the MultiMedia/Volume button for about 5 seconds until the MS reboots and then CarPlay will enable.

For some reason, mine will only flash the lights every other push of the bottom about 75% of the time. Other times it flashes every push and starts right up. Never started at more than 10 feet away which is almost useless from the get go.

Had it to the dealer a couple of times, they don't have a clue as in with every other aspect of this vehicle, no one seems to know shit.

It sounds like the vehicle may be experiencing a weak key fob signal, radio-frequency interference may be the cause. Low-quality electronics and some LED devices can generate electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can disrupt signals used by key fobs and garage door openers. I recommend unplugging any recently installed third-party accessories, such as dash cameras—ideally at the power source, since the cable itself can act as an antenna and emit EMI. If the vehicle is garage-kept, also check that the garage door opener is not using an LED bulb, as these are a common source of interference.

dont wait for or watch for the flashes, it will screw up your timing.

press lock button consistently fast (.5 to 1 sec between pushes 1 & 2 and hold on 3)

if you are timing the lock button presses to the lights, you wont remote start the vehicle most of the time.

Can't speak to anyone else's experience but I've tried, my wife's tried, my son's tried , friends have tried, all inconsistent mainly leaning to not working and again, even if it does work it's never past 10 feet. My wife's fob seems to work abit better than mine but still inconsistent.

If I get time this week I'm gonna stop at the dealership and be a little more insistent on figuring this out. My wife leaves by 5 am and it is freaking cold running out there to start the 4R every morning.

Have the wife use the Toyota App to remote start while you get it figured out.

Look. I would say I'm pretty good at old school video games here and still play once and awhile with my kid.... but getting this "simple" remote sequence can be more frustrating than Contra 3.....
I feel your pain OP.
Honestly, since it's my first vehicle with it, it was easy to forget I have it...

I was kinda getting inconsistent results with keyfob

so I started pressing 1,2,3-hold fast, all three under 1 sec total.
now it starts every time. the 3 4runner confirmation blinks are
much slower than my button presses


I had been going a wee bit slower, closer to the confirmation blink
speed and under 1 second each press, and it started often but liked to
not start a lot...was getting irked..

it is better to just go fast
for click/click/hold

Just walked out and gave that a try, tried it before but I thought maybe it is me. Nope, no luck, it just seems it's out of whack and only picking up every other push of the button.


Now, half the time I try and use my phone, it's doesn't connect. Doesn't matter where I'm at either so I don't think it's anything to do with interference. But boy, if I leave my door unlocked or a window cracked open it sure does connects then...

Even in a parking lot, it won't unlock my doors until I'm about 10' away. Whole system is useless like this.

Off to the dealer again....

I've had great luck with the app but not looking forward to paying $10 a month for it.

For me the key fob is crazy hit or miss, willing for it to be my fault.
