A random observation of the day:

My TRD ORP turned one year old about a week ago and I did not renew the remote connect feature - hard to justify a subscription fee of $15/month for services I rarely use (toyota maps, remote start, etc.). But I like to check my milage and "miles to go" and tire pressure when away from the vehicle as I update my spreadsheet tracking my fuel use and record maintenance/mods by odometer readings. Turns out I get all the info I really want on the app still. (no longer gives me miles to go but it gives tank filled percentage - even better, really.)
I hadn't seen anyone else mention this so here you go: (BTW - my reason for checking was to see if my TPMS had caught up after I switched tires yesterday from off-road to OEM - and I was happy to see it had).

That is indeed pretty cool. I too was not going to renew this so it is nice to know I'll still have some info in the app.

I am approaching 1 year and the expiration of my trial subscription. I too did not want to incur the monthly charge. I was kind of shocked when the Toyota salesman said I had to pay for navigation. (At first I thought he was pulling my leg.)

Has anyone seen what happens to Toyota Navigation when your subscription runs out? Is the map still there and you simply can’t request a route to a destination? Or is the map screen blacked out and completely unusable?

I want to know what to expect.

Thanks!

There is a screen that pops up saying how easy it is to get the remote access active again. I think this is all you get on the "navigation" icon (arrow-like icon). No maps.
Caveat: I've not done anything in the Toyota app except use the radio tuner and adjusted audio fade when a back seat passenger was complaining about not hearing the music:>). I pretty much go straight to Android Auto all the time. So I might have missed something that is there re: maps but I don't think so.

Just happened to me this week... Sad thing. map screen shows a message along the lines "Enjoy the experience : subscribe" along with a 3d city background.
Quite the backstab if you ask me.
I actually liked the Toyota map, but 15$/ month.... I'm more of a "perpetual license" kind of person, not this infinite subscription model everything goes seems to move towards.
Ok done rambling.

I'm in the same boat, past 1 year and getting that "ENJOY" message, I'm still not sure how they can sell a feature and then turn it off and demand a monthly fee to access something you've already paid for. App access because it goes through Toyota, fine, I can see asking for a monthly subscription but not to have maps on there is pure bullshit.

I think if this issue is pushed through legal means that it could and should be reversed. ANyone on here a lawyer?...lol

At the end of one year, leaving the current nav version, then requiring payment for updates would be more reasonable.

Well, the disappearing map thing is a disappointing thing. I was afraid that would be the answer.

Guess I better brush up on my Google Maps skills.

Toyota raises the 6th gen prices AND then charges you on top of that for the navigation feature. That is pretty bold.

Guess they figured out that some are comfortable with the Sirius XM model which follows the same approach (short free trial, then a lifetime of monthly charges).

I always call and negotiate seriously better Sirius pricing. Wonder how that would work with Toyota!

Google Maps via CarPlay is fine… until you are in an area with no cell service.
Yep, we discovered this while in Alaska driving a rental with no nav. Unless maps and data are stored on the phone, not so useful.

Exactly, now imagine paying for a 70K+ offroad vehicle that is going to spend a big chunk of time in area's without cell service. Doesn't seem legal and definitely not ethical.

you do realize toyota has to pay someone for that feature/updates. if you want updates you pay for it. my 2014, i never updated the maps in 12 yrs.

google pays for it also but the cost is not passed onto consumer's. usually business pay for the api use for themselves or thru ads.

trust me, that free stuff from google is being paid by someone (and as a consumer your data is being harvested so you are indirectly paying for it)

I live in the Midwest, my only real use is the remote start, which really helps when its subzero outside. Otherwise I use CarPlay.
