Hey everyone,

We've all been there – needing to air up tires, inflate camping gear, or even power air tools. When it comes to air pumps, there are two main camps: the portable crew and the fixed (on-board) enthusiasts. Both have their loyal followers, and for good reason! But which one truly reigns supreme in terms of convenience, performance, and overall utility?

Let's break down some of the common arguments for each, and then we want to hear from you!

ARB Portable compressor
ARB Digital Tire Inflator

Used this compressor for 5+ years mostly with our 2020 Ford Ranger prior to trading in for our 2026 ORP.

Compressor is mounted in a rugged protective case which prevents debris from being sucked in and provides stability while sitting on the ground. Case has room for gauges and other tire repair items. Everything stores neatly inside.

Rather than running at 100% duty cycle, this compressor shuts down while not pumping air, like when moving between tires. This helps prevent overheating.

Simple grab-n-go tackle box style storage is convenient to toss in any vehicle. Pop the hood, connect to vehicle battery, turn it on.

Arb twin brushless. Portable 100%. Want ability to move it from car to car. Help someone a few cars up in the backcountry lineup that a mounted version could not do.

Team fixed here! Have a single barrel ARB under the hood of my old 4th gen, so much extra space there! My 6th gen came with a compressor already built in.

Hate my ARB digital tire inflator, always a hassle to get it to sit properly on the valve stem with its one single jaw lock. Added a Lock n flate chuck to the air hose that came with my 6th gen, it's so much better.

Where does everyone stand on CO2 tanks? Long ago in a Jeep galaxy far far away I had purchased a 20# PowerTank system from 4x4 Group Buy. It pulled double duty as the source to run my impact gun as well as airing back up after a day of rockcrawling. Plus it was easy to reset beads on tires with a CO2 tank once you pull the core from the valve stem. Can't do that with most compressors unless you have a good-sized tank plumbed in.

Fast forward to now and the tank mainly sits in my shed and rarely gets use. My impact and ratchet are 20v and even my portable compressor is 20v, so not much of a need for the bottle. But in terms of speed nothing really beats it. You could air up a 35" tire from 15psi to 30psi in about 30 seconds tops. Yet the hassle of refilling or swapping bottles could get old.

Just curious if anyone has considered that route.

don’t feel like giving up the space or taking on the hassle just to save some airing up time. Just how I feel. Probably justified for others.

I get what you're saying. And space in these 6th Gens are at an even higher premium. But the portability was nice.

I guess I didn't really answer the OP's questions, but I like portability over permanent mounting. Gives me the option of taking it out and moving from vehicle to storage and back to a different vehicle. My current compressor is the Dewalt 20v variety. And while it works as advertised, it sure takes a long while to air up the tires. This weekend I only dropped pressure to 25psi for going on the beach but it took like 6-7 minutes to air back up to 35psi when I left. It's not as critical on the last day of a long weekend camping - I can prep the camper or load chairs and other items as the compressor is running. But after a quick day on the beach and I'm sitting in the parking lot literally waiting for the compressor it seemed like a loooooong time to waste. Also didn't help that the flies were out (shore breeze). Wish I had an option with much higher CFM.

Not much literature out there on it, but what I could find is 0.5cfm at a max of 90psi.

I had the CO2 tank installed in my FJCruiser . I am trying to find somewhere in the back that is strong enough to mount it to . Too much plastic with way to much air space before you find metal . I definitely want to secure it to keep it from flying around ! It is heavy !
I go to Silver Lake Sand Dunes often . There is always a line to fill tires at the exit , plus the air coming out of the hose is very hot !

We have air at our beach crossings too and they also get a line waiting. The issue we have learned is that there is often water in the hoses and folks have ended up with enough water in their tires that they needed to remove the tires to empty them back out. Frustrating but the air is free at the state park so likely they aren't going to do anything about it.
