Sorry if this is a dumb question/comment but why do I have a bigger oil filter in my law mower than the new 4cyl turbo? That in and of itself is one reason I am more comfortable doing oil changes every 5k than the recommended service intervals. Is anyone else concerned about this or is there a rational I am unaware of for this small oil filter?

just the way it’s designed. I personally think even pushing it to 5k miles between changes is a lot. I’m doing every 3ish. it’s cheap so better to be safe and get a little piece of mind hoping this engine holds up alright later in its years.

That was the first thing that I noticed and the Simplicity of removal during an oil change . The same filters are used on the RAV4.
I welcome this canister style opposed to the element Style on our old 5th gens.

These filters are easy to find and are sold pretty much everywhere. Even walwort has the supertech version of these that are really pretty good!.

Short oil changes are in order with a turbo especially in extreme conditions.
Just my two cents.

Yes, frequent oil changes.......Teqsport has a complete oil change kit, Toyota 0w-20 (6 quarts), Toyota oil filter and crush gasket for $43.00. Can't go wrong at that price.

I also thought the oil filter was small...then I realized it was most likely designed by someone WAY smarter than me...and I haven't given it a second thought since. I know what I'm good at, and oil filtering is not my lane.

That's a terrible assumption. If they let engineers have the final say on the design, a 4Runner would weigh another ton because their design would call for much heavier steel in most all of the vehicle. If a good engineer had the final say, the vehicle would probably have 2 filters and they'd both be much larger.

The engineers design and then the bean counters have the final say. They force changes to the bare minimum to save costs on EVERYTHING. And then marketing comes along and says..."What's the absolute maximum miles we can claim between changes?"

My 35 yr. old John Deere lawn tractor also has a larger filter than the Toy. That's because JD designs stuff to last a long time.

Your 35 year old John Deer is also built around likely 40-50+ year old technology. Not saying that new filter is right it wrong but a lot has changed in that time.

Reminder that Toyota oil filter prioritize oil flow over oil filtration.

50% efficiency at 20 micron size.

On certain forums, they are denoted as 'rock catchers'.

Point being, it's probably fine as their engines tend to run clean over all anyway.

Toyota specifies a cheaper filter media to save costs.

Totally agree and yes I’m in Canada so I change every 5000kms or 3,100 Miles

Seeing it's a turbo engine I think a larger filter equals more oil, better heat dissipation. I'm looking at the YzzD3 or the YZZF1. Will probably buy one of each and determine what bypass valve pressure is on all three, YZZN1 included. Most bypass at 12 -15 PSI so if you are running down the highway with oil pressure at 30 PSI, most of the oil never goes thru the filter element, just bypasses. My guess is most of the oil is only filtered at engine idol.

Since we're talking about filters what about the fuel filter on the 6th generation! It doesn't exist on the exterior of the framework. It is embedded inside the gas tank! My third gen had an external fuel filter that I would change every 30,000 miles and we're just talking miles we're not talking idle time in the stop and go to where traffic.
I cut one of them open and was thrown back by how dirty it was. And this is from top tier fuel that I typically run.
Perhaps I am missing something in the fuel filtering system, but I don't believe that filters are immune to clogging from the fuel we run today.
I digress.

External fuel filters for gasoline engines hasn't been a thing for 99% of vehicles in the last decade or better, sadly.

Yeah, these internal filters are integrated with the fuel pump. And I think Toyota says the internal filter and pump are a lifetime part whatever that means!
