I’ve been trying to diagnose a weird noise that has started happening on my ORP Hybrid. Around 1500 RPM I’ll get this weird flub/fluttery/vibe noise; started noticing it the last few times I’ve driven it and especially since it’s gotten colder in the Midwest. It seems to be coming from the front drivers side.

I’m uploading a couple audio clip examples.

I looked under and at all the components in the wheel wells, everything is secure, the only thing that wiggles and is suspect is the splash guard on the interior of the wheel well, on the drivers side. You can kinda flick it and it will make a similar sound.

Anyone experience this before? Worth a visit to the dealership? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

We've got the same vehicle and haven't experienced in 4400 miles. Did you look at the mirror cap, front fender flares as I've read some have had them come loose, or wheel liner which you've said looks fine.

Definitely interesting. The fact its specifically at a RPM and not a speed tells me its something that is touching or in contact with the engine.

maybe pop the hood and start feeling the box's and plastics in the engine bay. Anything that would feel reverberating from the engine could be loose.

as it gets colder the plastics will shrink a bit and may become loose in some anchor areas.

if you have access to a heated garage, try parking your truck and letting it get warm then go out and try again to see if the sound is still there.

if the sound is gone after allowing the truck to sot in a warm garage, i would link the noise to plastic compression due to cold weather and begin chasing the issue from there.

good luck with the dealer, when it comes to sound diagnostics, they seem to always claim its something catastrophic like a new transmission or a faulty piston ring when in reality its just some ice buildup on a break calipre.

i would do my own experiments first if i were you before letting the dealer toy with it.

Update for those who run into this in the future:

I figured out the source of the noise, it is the Engine Sound Enhancement System. After some research I discovered many 2024 Tacoma owners experienced issues where the system would glitch out and play the same noise repeatedly at some RPM points.

My solution was to purchase a Carista ($39.99) and the one month subscription ($14.99) to turn it off or reset the system. The dealership can also accomplish this if requested.

I turned the one off in the Pro. What crap that horrid piped in noise is. I usually run mine in Sport and it was so intrusive and sounded as if it was manufactured by an 8 yr old trying to mimic a sound that only an 8 yr old could admire. I like our Toyotas but the Wheels on the ORP and the Piped In Noise is a mystery?

Completely with you on the noise, it’s super intrusive as well. Once it’s off it’s much quieter in the cabin, I knew immediately that was the issue once it was off. You can hear the engine but all the sounds come much more in-front and center as it should. 4-cylinder sounds fine.

Noob question: is such a charge permanent? Or is there always a chance you go in for service and they do an update or something and all your customizations reset?

ooh, looks like the carista is on sale for $22.49 on Amazon right now!

Did the same thing on my TH. They were having a sell, in the US at least, and the sensor was $29.99 on Amazon, and the 12 month subscription was $30 from the Google Play Store. I also enabled the setting to allow me to roll all my windows down by pressing and holding the unlock, and the rear seat belt reminder dings since I have cargo and dogs back there and never humans.

There is a chance if they have to flash the ECU the setting would be reversed, but you could also tell them you had a dealer set them before and make sure they stick after they do their work. The dealer has the same access to all of these settings but they like to charge you for a service visit to change them. Think ECU flashes would be a rare occurrence though.

Great, thanks. Just bought one, comes tomorrow! Can’t wait to get rid of the fake engine noise.

It is a pretty slick tool. You can also use it on multiple cars, just in case you have others that are supported. Sadly, I found the wife's Subaru isn't, but my buddy wants to try it on his Tahoe to see what settings are available.

yeah imho engine sound enhancement is ...garbage

I don't care that my 4runner sounds like a sewing machine

I stopped caring about aggressive engine sounds and
enhanced exhaust rumble when I turned 9
I'll never be too old for that. My Supra with it's AWE exhaust is epic on downshifts. My rotaries were sex on wheels with their F1 howl and 4 foot flames. My crotch rockets scream, that's why I could never do an EV. Might as well send me to my grave.
