I’m genuinely curious so can someone explain what’s the issue is and why someone needs to go to these lengths?

I get the dealer gps that’s highly invasive and I would be pissed. Plus there certainly is an over reach with Toyota giving data to insurances and monitoring your driving but you can turn those functions off through the apps privacy settings and still use all of the handy and useful features.

paranoia

some people (not saying that about anyone here, no sir)
need a boogeyman to be afraid of, that they can control,
and feel good about at least one thing they can control in their lives.

but also it's the bulls*it all corporations are doing to make us
owners mere data harvesting product to get statistics out of and squeeze for more
cash. bottom line it's no longer the 4runner is the product, it is the buyer.

Some people just like to have control over what personal data is harvested. Period.

For me, it's the total lack of discrete control. It's all or nothing with Toyota. I understand that some data is necessary to be processed to provide some of the services. It's bad enough that basic features are complete hidden behind a subscription paywall under the guise of "cloud services", it's another that to provide any of those services, I have to consent to my data being used beyond what's absolutely required to provide those services. It's pretty clear what Toyota wants and there's evidence what they want to do with the data. I choose to not participate and remove any ability for them to gather data.

Yep the customer is the product, it had been that way for some time but most never knew it. Other it was a badge of honor to be the product (Nielsen homes) .

I kind of understand why but when they go to far it’s also problematic. Luckily there are places that force stricter privacy laws and in many cases companies will just use the strictest rules for everyone out of convenience and actually cost saving.

Back to the original topic of this thread, the aftermarket tracker. I’m not discounting the privacy issues created by the DCM and CS though.

I’m glad to come across this thread.

My OBD port is black on a 26 Plat.

I just removed this from my ride:

So because of this thread I went and looked at my port (26 TRD Pro) and it's black.

I texted my salesperson asking him what tracker they used and he says they do not instal them.

I'm going to have it checked out in the next few days but in the meantime, is he 100% lying or is there an oem black version of the port and he could be telling the truth?

Thanks

---------------------

ETA: Just went back and read through some of the thread. It seems like many folks have a black oem port. I'll still get it double checked to make sure.

I checked my port and it is black in a factory harness with covering that is secured under the dash none of what comes off my port look like that and nothing is piggy backed from it, the same as a few others have mentioned. I have been searching and apparently I can’t find anything that says Toyota uses black. Now I need to know 🤷🏻‍♂️

Does your OBD II Port have P/N 90980-12D97 marked on it?

The OBD2 port is the usual place, but surely there are other ways and locations that could be used. I'd say anywhere there's power available and if they're committed enough, splicing wires means endless possibilities. Clearly, convenience plays into this, but how can you be sure there's no tracking devices present by only inspecting the OBD2 port area?

In addition to removing the dash panel/underside panel/kick panel and visually inspecting, can't you use RF Signal Detector or Sweeper?

That is what I did on mine to make sure there wasn't a secondary one. I got zero readings under the dash.

do you have a specific detector in mind ?

if someone has this expensive gear and is skilled on operating it, they'll need to weed out the 5 transmitters built in by the factory, to narrow down what might be an anomaly. the equipment to detect this in 3D space w/o tearing the vehicle apart is not cheap

and for anyone doing this, if you did not find the 5 built in factory transceivers, you didn't sweep enough imho
