Anyone have experience or just thoughts on changing differential oil and transmission fluid at 5k? From what I understand, it may be suggested to get rid of break-in contamination. I will say, I haven't towed anything nor have I gone through many dusty roads. TIA!

Just did my rear diff at 11k and I was not happy about the contamination and superfine metal particles on the magnetic drain plug. The fluid was dark and mostly contaminated with metal. Nothing large at all just very fine. Will do the front / transfer case this tomorrow too.

I've seen others also report the same. Light offroad about 10 times so far. If you care to keep it a long time I'd do it 10-15k miles first then jump to the every 30k (unless severe towing/offroad in which Toyota recommends every 15k).

Also since you seem to like keeping things well oiled consider this too, fairly cheap / easy to do.

I truly appreciate your reply. I decided that I will change out my front/rear diff oil. I figure better early than too late.

BTW, your links had me going down a rabbit hole of similar questions and experiences. I just killed like 30min while non the clock 😆

I want to keep mine for a while. Therefore will change the rear differential at 5k, then the front and the transfer case. Transmission too before 10k. Oil is cheap!

Do it if it'll make you feel better but it's not needed. Most axles never get their fluid changed. It's only when the breather gets plugged up and pressure builds up from heat blowing out a seal do they think of it. Back when I was into 4 wheeling with the old solid front axle Toyotas the oil was green from all the muddy water that got into them. After a short time I just didn't even bother to change it. I never had a failure. Again, if it gives you peace of mind do it. It's cheap and not that difficult. While under there I would have you look into doing the breather mod.

Forgot to ask you: I assume you used OEM 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil? If so, where did you buy it from and what was the cost?

No too expensive not worth the benefit.

Front / Rear: Valvoline 75w-90 full synthetic gear oil. 4 quarts are $40 right now
Need 5.9 qt for rear and 1.4 qt for front for 4wd models. The fulltime 4wd models like limited require a different amount for the t-case oil/front diff.

Transfer Case: Red Line Synthetic M/T Fluid GL-4, 70W-75
PT# 50604 - $23/qt need 1.2 quarts (for 4wd, fulltime 4wd needs 1.5qt)

Rear Diff Drain / Fill Plug36 ft-lb / 49 Nm
Front Diff Drain Plug48 ft-lb / 65 Nm
Front Diff Fill Plug29 ft-lb / 39 Nm
Transfer Case Drain / Fill27 ft-lb?? Need to confirm
