Are you using a fuel additive like Chevron's Complete Fuel System Cleaner? I know the 4R is Direct and port injected which should reduce build up but do we need to use an additive like the one linked below:

https://www.chevronlubricants.com/en_us/home/products/techron-complete-fuel-system-cleaner.html

I used this in a Ford 2.0 Ecoboost twin turbo. Every 4-6 months typically. It had 160K when I sold it and ran like new. Power and gas mileage was like day one. Not a scientific test but still.

If your using or planning to use, share your reasoning and what product you use.

I have also used Chevron’s product with great results. Multiple mechanics have told me this is what they use in their personal vehicles.

I used to put Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant with every full tank or every other time partial fill. I then talked to a buddy(Parts Manager and Gear head who rebuilds his own engines for racing) and he suggested Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner every 10-15K depending how much you drive.

I try to use Top Tier type gas which has fuel additives to keep upper valves and fuel system components clean. Depending where you live it’s fairly easy to find (Conoco, Sinclair, Phillips 66, etc.) and it’s a better gas for your vehicle all around. There’s an App “Top Tier” like GasBuddy that maps out stations with top tier gas. I’ll used a bottle of Techron at the 15k intervals as I only put about 6-6500 miles annually.

I'm using a bottle of Techron every 5000 miles (to keep with my oil change interval). Can't really hurt and it's cheap. I also use Top Tier fuel. Between that and Toyotas combined fuel injection approach, I feel very confident there will be minimal build-up.

I have never regularly used additives. I generally use quality fuel (top tiier), usually from Costco (mainly because they are convenient most places I have been and are top tier). I have heard (somewhat hearsay, so take it as such) that the Chevon additive is the best one if you are going to use one.

All my vehicles have lasted basically forever with no engine issues (2 with almost 400,000 miles on them and one I sold at around 160,000 miles and another that was running well at around 190,000 but retired when it had an emission problem unrelated to the engine itself.

I started pumping gas at 16. 42 years ago, ouch. Chevron. I have always used Techron. Techron is “detergent”. They basically invented it. I use it in my boat instead of Yamaha Ring Free. Same main ingredient and a less expensive

I only use Costco fuel, but the only way you are going to get clean intake valves is adding a catch can/oil separator.

If that is true, why would manufactures not add that to all vehicles. Do any stock vehicles have that contraption? Just asking.

There is another recent thread on this forum that said they were told by a company that installs catch can/oil separators that they would never do it on the 6th gen 4Runner. It did not give more details as to why. I had never heard of that device so cannot provide any input on my own.

I only use top tier fuel and stick to Chevron/Shell most of the time. I also use the Chevron addative every 5k miles; because why now. It's only $7 a bottle. I know what cheap fuel does to the fuel system and pumps/injectors are not cheap to replace.

Because the general public doesnt care and/or want to empty the can when needed. Plus the manufacturer doesnt care either.

rav4 hybrid and prius have oil separators, not just a PCV valve
2025 4runner 6th gen Fuel Additive - Are you using? 1772844987455-b8

4runner has basic pcv valve

D4S engines need not worry about direct injection problems and dirty valves as
port injectors wash the backside of the valves.
