Has anyone been using fuel injector cleaner? If so, what’s your preferred brand I was using the Lucas upper cylinder lubricant in my sequoia. I was wondering if it’ll be safe for the 4Runner.

If you use top tier fuel there is usually no need for fuel injector cleaner. That being said if you live in a rare area that doesn't have top tier fuel Techron has been proven to be one of the very best ones. A list of gas stations that carry top tier fuel can be found here. https://www.toptiergas.com/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22504288460

I just get quality gas and don’t really worry about it (usually Chevron or Shell). On my M2, I’ll run Techron’s cleaner every ~5k miles. I’ll probably do the same with this truck at some point

It certainly won't hurt it especially sticking with techron which is made by Chevron. Those fuel stations you mentioned are on the top tier fuel list, and I do use techron in mine if I'm spending weeks in the back country with the no name mom and pop gas stations around. Shell also has some of the best additives already in the fuel so if you did stick to to those brands the fuel injector cleaner is already in it. I'm always nervous about those high mountain gas stations I use out on the trail, especially after getting a bad tank in Creed Colorado from a no name. station in my old 4Runner.

Getting a bad batch of gas is never fun lol. I got a bad tank of E85 in the M2 once (there was literal dirt in the fuel) and ended up having to clean/replace every component in the fuel system lol. I’m never going back to those no name stations ever again

Agree with others, I've basically never used additives--my old Honda (not fuel injection, way before that) went 387000 miles without an issue (one minor engine issue the whole time; I think it may have been more emission related), Toyota Sienna with (currently) 382,000 miles--no engine issues at all except one ignition coil was replaced. Other vehicles fewer miles but same result. I no almost exclusively use Costco (yep, top tier) when I can.

I am surprised dirt in the fuel would be a big problem aside from clogging the fuel filter quicker (should not get past that).

We have a station in our rural area that carries non ethanol 91 octane. I’ve been using it but it’s about a half a buck higher per gallon. It’s very popular here , they are selling it over ethanol fuel by almost 2-1.

Generally snake oil, rather just fill with Top Tier fuel - which is most all of the brands these days.

Once in a while run some premium Exxon or Shell as a little treat.

Fuel brand does matter a little, and Shell seems to have the best performance.

You can in fact run an F1 car on ordinary 91/93 octane Shell.

Let’s see what the science says?

I've been following him for for years and following his advice. I especially like his explanation of top tier fuel and while why that's important as well, and of course the oil recommendations.

It is also worth noting that since around 2022, the EPA has mandated Tier 3 fuel standards.

Aka 10ppm sulphur fuel.

Fuel quality is much higher and much cleaner than it was even 10yrs ago.
