So, tested tonight on the way home and even using the built in Toyota maps while having Audible running on Android Auto, it skipped coming into town as I passed the radio tower.

I ran a wifi analyzer and it looks like the connection to the car is running on the 5GHz band on channel 36.

My Carplay works well and almost never glitches out. Sometimes at stop lights and I pick up my phone and a video is playing on a website like Insta, the phone disconnects. This does not happen a lot and it's easy to resolve. The radio tower thing is concerning though.

The tower thing is odd, because it is also not every tower I pass. I tried scanning for signals slowly this morning as I passed the one that does cause issues and my phone didn't pick anything up from the tower to give me any indicators. Android Auto was still using the same channel 36.

its not a bandwidth problem, from what i can tell, its an iteraction problem between the mapping software on the phone taking over priority over the sound app causing the hiccup.

thats what i can tell using AA. but if i dont use the mapping software and use the toyota nav map i dont get the hiccup
Interesting theory, I will test it when I go out tomorrow. If this is correct I will definitely be sending Apple & Toyota a bug report because I really like Apple Maps over the Toyota mapping software.

Have you checked if this is just an Apple Maps issue or does it also happen with Google Maps? I'll test this as well.
Ding, ding!!! We have a winner. I tested numerous times after stopping and shutting off engine and I was able to replicate your fix every single time. If I run the Toyota Nav there is absolutely no glitches or drops while playing Apple Music on CarPlay. If I run Apple Maps while listening to Apple Music the glitches start up after about 15 minutes. If I hear glitches while on Apple Maps, I switched to Toyota Nav and restarted the song and the glitch went away.

I need to test Google Maps next to see if that will also cause glitches but I fear it will. I also need to test onXoff road since that is another nav app I use.

Either way, this is a very interesting bug since it only affects my 4Runner and not my wife's Hyundai Palisade. Not quite sure who to send the bug report to; Toyota, Apple or maybe both.

Thanks again for the fix.

I use Apple Maps and Apple Music exclusively over Toyota navigation. CarPlay works great for me until my wife gets in the car. She’s a secondary driver. When I’m alone the CarPlay connection is solid. When she’s in the car with me, the 4Runner correctly connects to my phone but about 10 minutes down the road drops me and connects to her phone. Sometimes multiple times. So then we have to go thru the gymnastics of getting my phone reconnected since my phone is the one with the destination loaded into Apple Maps. Not a great test of our sanity when we are motoring down the road at 75 mph and approaching a turn or exit. I may have to go to the wired connection for our upcoming trip to Florida to keep the peace.
