I've not looked at mine yet but I'm all about being proactive rather than reactive with the maintenance & changing things. I need this 4Runner to last me for 15-20 years if I can help it.
It's so easy and inexpensive, might as well be ready to replace it with a new one when you check it.

So he cant buy one until he looks at it? Lol
To be honest, I ordered 8 of the these Premium Guard cabin filters several months for $118. They are the standard type of filters but the filtration ratings are excellent based on my research.
Premium Guard also offers a HEPA/charcoal infused/antimicrobial cabin filter. At the time I was buying I didn't choose it because I had seen some comments in forums about these types' filtration media being too dense & causing problems. I didn't want any issues so I purchased the standard filters which is what comes from factory anyway but I didn't know until finding in this post that Toyota offers an enhanced cabin filter also. I'm now considering buying one of those & trying it out.

As far as engine air filters, I'm going to be using these compatible Wix filters. I bought 12 of them from Walmart.com for a good price months ago.

I'm pretty particular about things I use for my vehicle & I'm value minded so I do alot of research before buying. I do believe you get what you pay for most of the time...but I don't believe the most expensive products are always the best.

I do the same thing for all my vehicles. I have cases of oil filters and air filters.

What are your choosen filter brand(s)?

For oil filters I'm using OE Toyota for the first 15,000 miles then switching to these CarQuest Premium filters for 4,500-5,000 mile OCIs exclusively with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 oil. I've got a case of filters & several containers of oil collecting dust but ready for service.

For filters I always just stick with OEM. They are always priced decently and have had no issues.

Can't go wrong with OE stuff. They'll typically always fit and function as Toyota specified.

I just looked up the price of the OE Toyota charcoal filter from my preferred dealership but I'll not be buying those unless there is a hell of a sale on them. Currently selling for $36.43 each! I'll use the less costly but high quality Premium Guard filters for less money.

Why not use Toyota products and parts?

Why not use Toyota products and parts?
Toyota parts are always guaranteed to fit, function as intended & usually warrantied...but there are some aftermarket brands that exceed Toyota's quality notably in filters. The Toyota oil filters have been tested & has become well known for prioritizing flow over actual filtration efficiency. They allow smaller particles to pass through while only catching relatively larger particles. In my countless hours of watching helpful YouTube reviews showing testing, comparison & inspection of commonly replaced automotive products I have found that Toyota/Denso doesn't produce the best filters. They aren't bad at all & they get the job done but they aren't recognized for having the highest filtration ratings. Their ratings aren't published by Toyota/Denso usually & I think there's a reason for that. I prefer to use filters that state what the filtration rating is & preferably have been tested by independent reviewers who are reputable. I also factor in value for the product & watch for sales then buy several at a time if it's a pretty good price. OE Toyota filters are completely fine to use but I just choose what I believe are better quality & better value aftermarket filters & motor oil. For most everything else I try to stick to using OE Toyota parts & fluids. I catch them on a sale when possible. I'm using all OE Toyota filters currently actually but they will be changed to aftermarket filters when I reach the mileages I've decided on changing them at. I simply don't want to waste what came with my 4Runner. I'm currently using Toyota oil filters for the first 15,000 miles because I have two of them on deck & they will catch the larger particles during new engine break in. Then I'll switch to CarQuest Premium oil filters because they have a higher filtration efficiency to catch smaller particles post break in & in the years to come. This is my plan of care & only my opinion of course.

Well in comparison to the OE Toyota charcoal filter you had mentioned Premium Guard offers this type & it's currently $23.78 at HighFlow.com (though it is currently sold out).
Premium Guard makes high quality products for a good price. In fact they are the manufacturer of many different aftermarket brands who contract with them. They just slap on brand name labels & it's eventually sold for the marked up price of a well advertised, recognizable brand name. In fact, I'm almost certain that Premium Guard manufactures CarQuest Premium & Extended Life oil filters. When compared side by side they are practically identical designs & materials but with a different color paint & different label.
I owned a 2003 Toyota Tundra from 2003 until February 2026. It was my daily driver. The last 4-5 years of it's time with me I was using Wix air filters & Service Pro oil filters. Wix is widely recognized for great filters. Service Pro is kind of a shop brand & not easily found to purchased by individuals but this brand is surprisingly high quality with an excellent filtration rating. I was buying them in an 8 count box from a seller on eBay for about $3 each & I never had a problem with them. Ran them for ~5,000-7,000 mile OCIs with Valvoline full synthetic motor oils. My insurance provider totalled my truck after some asshole stole my catalytic converters off it. Otherwise it ran like a champ. I collected a $4,100 payout & got focused on my 2025 4Runner. I miss that Tundra though.
Toyota oil filters are acceptable quality but still mediocre compared to some other aftermarket brands. They are on average only about $7 though so they are afforable mediocre quality if anything.

I just replaced my factory paper filter with the carbon one at 1 year/15k miles. Carbon one feels much heavier and solid - so far it's been helping a LOT with the pollen we've been getting in NC. No perceived difference in airflow so I'd say this is a win.

PN is confirmed 87139-30110

Also for anyone looking to replace the engine air filter, PN 17801-YZZ11 is NOT the one that comes with the truck from factory. It is a suitable replacement but it is much thinner than the original. The original one is PN 17801-0P051 (or PN 17801-31131).

Wild that my mom's X5 has cheaper German made cabin filters than Toyota OEM or Wix.
