Hello!

New to this group as I just bought a 6G4R TRD Pro.

I’m looking to do my first upgrades but I am taking this very slowly as I want to have the perfect setup with no regrets.

Short term goals is to do a 2-3” preload collar lift (westcot) and add 17” bead locked wheels and 35’s. I will be taking this bad boy off road on some rock crawling and adventuring.

My question for you expert off-roaders is what in your experience would be the best setup for medium rock climbing/off-roading as far as tires, wheels, lift, and offset? I want it to be fully functional and also look nice. But functionality is my priority.

I eventually will upgrade to a Mid Travel or maybe Long travel in a couple of years. But I first want to use the hell out of the TRD Pro suspension hence why I’m going to install the preload collar lift.

Thanks in advance!

For your use case, 17” wheels are definitely the play. More sidewall = better off-road performance. That’s why most people end up there.

I’d be cautious jumping straight to 35s on a preload collar lift though. Sure, It’ll work, but you’re adding weight and stress without gaining travel, and you’ll likely run into trimming and drivability tradeoffs. A 33 or 34 is kind of the sweet spot on stock suspension and will handle medium rock crawling just fine.

For wheels, something like 17x8.5 or 17x9 with 0 to +25 offset is a start. Beadlocks are great if you’re running very low PSI, but not necessary for most trail use.

If it were me, I’d run a 2–3” lift, 34s, and wheel it hard. You’ll learn the truck and can always step into 35s with mid/long travel later.

Just a a heads up, the pro suspension is more so built/tuned for speed/baja wheeling

Thanks bro! Great info there. That’s kind of where I’m at with wheel size. 17x8.5 or 17x9. From what I’ve seen online a +25 or more will do better rubbing wise. I was pretty set on 35s. But if not, you’re saying 34’s would be the sweet spot? You didn’t talk too much about the width. I saw a video saying 11.5 is the sweet spot. But I can’t confirm.
Lift wise if you’re saying 2-3 inch lift is recommended then I would just go straight to the Mid travel and upgrade the UCAs.

If you plan to have a matching spare stowed underneath, research your tire choice to make sure it fits.

I’m running 34s with 18inch wheels. No issues. If you’re going to do hardcore (more than moderate) don’t run the Westcott designs preload collar lift. You lose down travel. The suspension on the TRD Pro is if you choose to rip it off. Rip it for King Suspension and Camburg Control arms.

You can go 35’s for sure. You’ll just be producing quite a bit of strain on the drive train unless you re-gear. Or maybe the pro has different gearing. Or can go the tune route to lessen the burden of 35’s.

Width you’re on the money.

I went OME 3in front and 2.5 back + UCA’s, adjustable sway bar links, diff drop, and adjustable track bar. Works for me because I have added weight and they’re great for various styles of wheeling.

That’s the fun of it, you have many different opportunities. The best advice I can give you is to go out and wheel then see where you need to hone in or revamp.

No reason to throw money at the truck just because. The best upgrade is the driver and experience.

Just my opinion, I would spend or save up the extra money for quality suspension upgrade and avoid the collar lift.
