Anyone use a ‘nanny cam’ as a trail camera?

There have been a bunch of times where I have been on a steep uphill ridge trail where as I reach the crest all I see is sky out of the windshield. No idea if the trail goes straight, left or right until I slowwwwwwly drive over the crest.
A built in forward facing trail camera - like what is offered on the ORP, ORPro etc would be ideal.

But if you don’t have one of those, would this work? I mean to seems like it should:

Nanny cam

Tiny indoor nanny/spy cam that can be attached to the front of your vehicle w some sturdy velcro, displays on your iphone what it sees. All for $25 vs spending $6k more to upgrade from a TRD OR to ORP.

The only time I‘d use it is on the aforementioned steep trails, and not in bad weather. What do you think?

I think you should try it and let us know! I’m looking for a similar solution

I've zip-tied an old go-pro to the undercarriage and livestreamed/recorded it to my phone for troubleshooting purposes. It would work fine for what you're talking about.

the gopro was the first thing I thought about but for some reason could not find info on livestreaming it to your phone.
if you do that and use carplay, can it display on the 4runner’s screen?

then again shouldn’t the nanny cam be able to do that too as it needs their app to connect to your phone, which means maybe carplay can also display it?

I’m also wondering if an Audiovox backup camera would work up front. Wireless and a 5” monitor.

I've been using this in the front grill sombrero of my 4th gen. https://a.co/d/4zDmkUp

You need to add some sort of a screen to go with it, something with an RCA video jack.

That's the thing w the nanny cam. It just connects to your phone via an app, fully wireless. So no other screens or connections needed. And if connects to your phone it may be able to be displayed on the car's screen via carplay.

From what I saw w the gopro streaming, it needs to stream to a streaming platform like youtube to show livestreaming. I could not see how it livestreams on your phone itself but I would like to be shown that it can!

When I did it many years ago, it was just an ad-hoc network that the gopro app initiated and basically livestreamed to my phone via wifi and that app (while the camera recorded). I have no idea if that's still how it's set up or even possible any more.

That's very cool but I am going to see if my $25 wireless stick and go solution works before looking at a $500 one.
:)
I hear ya, it's alot of coin unless you need the whole dashcam setup.

Not sure I would have actually bought one but since Wolfbox sent me this to do a review I would greatly miss it if I didn't have it.

Off roading for decades and I can truely say, this is a game changer....

And it will be on another level once I get this behind and below the front skid.

I believe you. Cresting a steep ridge not knowing which way the trail goes gets 'interesting'!
But seeing I only need that functionality a few times a year - maybe a $25 solution will be enough.
We'll see - if it is cr@p I will be sure to let people know!
