Anyone have any insight into the purpose of the dash switch AC On? It seems like the climate settings activate the AC as needed for a given temperature setting. What’s the switch there to do?

If the “A/C” switch is not pressed, the system will blow ambient temperature air or heated air.

Press the “A/C” switch.

Vehicles with the DUAL mode: When the function is on, “A/C ON” indicator will illuminate. When the function is off, “A/C OFF” indicator will illuminate.

Pages 451-452 of the 4Runner manual.

Hope that helps. Toggle the AC compressor for cabin temperature

I’ve noticed in my ORP single zone climate system. After startup, the system will blow cold air even with the a/c light off but if I cycle the light on then off, it will turn the compressor off and blow air that isn’t cold.

I bet it’s a system programming issue that will be updated at a later date

In my ‘25 Sport Prem, if the system is off and I turn the fan dial, the a/c compressor kicks on and the air blows cold (if the temp was set low before the system was turned off). The a/c indicator light on the switch does not come on. If I activate the switch, the light turns on but nothing else changes. If I hit the switch again, the light goes off, the fan slows and the air warms up. Clearly the compressor is deactivated. It’s odd, but I just roll with it.

Interesting. I’m kind of thinking that the switch really does nothing in my TRD Pro with the better climate package. Maybe it’s just a remnant from lower trims without full climate control.

So basically, the AC switch does nothing except take space on the dashboard.

If you use auto at all time yes. If not no. Of you push the button and turn ac off it works like it Has for years on all vehicles, it turns the ac off. It will blow air but will not use the compressor to cool that air.

I'd imagine there are those that don't want to use Auto, so not completely.
🖐 Here...

I never use Auto in any vehicle. When there is a large temp delta, the fan screams into an obnoxious max speed. If your ducts are full of dust, now it's all in your face.

Manually select temp & fan speed. Simple.
