Hi everyone!

Took delivery of a new 4runner about a week ago. Just found a decent scratch in the rear passenger door, no one and nothing has been in the back seat yet. I know scratches will eventually happen, but i’m just not sure if this type of scratch would happen with normal use, or if this is more unusual. Either way, it is just a cosmetic scratch, but man does it irritate me, especially since it came brand new and is in the interior. Anyways i’m trying to determine if even pursuing replacement with the dealership is worth it, because even if could get it done for free, is it worth the risk of replacing the entire door panel and relying on install quality in terms of fitment and future rattles? But as said, this scratch bugs the hell out of me. What do you all think?

Wipe it clean and hit it with a heat gun. Go slow and easy until it looks more uniform.

Worth a try. Just don't be too aggressive. This method worked well for me with a black fender flare scratch.

You can scratch it if you have a particularly tough thumbnail.

I wouldn't bother LOL

If it bugs you though, dealer will likely handle it fine.

Not to mention dogs...
Unfortunately, the current 4R and Tacoma seem to have rather cheap plastic trims, much more prone for visible scratches vs. all my previous generations I've owned.

Well, when I got my brand new car, there were already some visible scratches on the paint. I even spoke with the sales manager, and he offered to polish it. I agreed, and at first it looked good, but after one car wash, everything reappeared. It seems like they damaged the clear coat, and overall the paint quality isn’t that great. I’m pretty sure this wouldn’t happen in Japan. The salesperson also told me that when they remove those white protective covers from the paint, they don’t pay much attention and sometimes do it aggressively, which can leave a lot of scratches on a brand new car.

It would bug the hell out of me too. It bugs me just seeing your scratch! I would bring it back and have it replaced. You shouldn't have to jerk around trying to repair it yourself. And you shouldn't have to live with a scratch that you didn't make yourself unless they compensate you for it and that is acceptable to you. It's one of the reasons why you purchase a new vehicle so that you don't have to deal with the wear and tear of someone else. You can bet they would use it against you when they low ball you on trade in value.

i had a long lengthy post but deleted it and just going to say, you do you

in the end, after you request it and it takes 4+ months for that panel to come in, that panel will probably have more scuff marks. :ROFLMAO:

and @romik did you really need to quote that post 6 times in yours ???

that is more than a scratch, it's a gouge
107% dealer needs to remedy with replacement of that panel

vehicle should never have left the lot with pre-delivery damage.

damage happens sure, and there is an entire sub-industry which
handles car dealer scratches, dings, dents on new vehicles. this
being a factory panel, the dealer is the one who does the work, (vs
PDR, body shop, or glass replacement contractors)

The panels scratch super easy. After taking several road trips with little kids. Small scratches on the panel are the last thing I am thinking about. My toddler spent the last 8 hours kicking the door panel and wiping his greasy hands all over the panels and windows. Can we talk about vomit, Cheese-It, and fries all over the place yet?

you can ask but dont expect them to replace it. I'm sure a new door panel is relatively inexpensive to replace. Guessing a couple hundred dollars since it's all plastic. Not a big loss if it really bugs you.

Toyota will replace it for free.

If that was delivered with that gouge, it did not pass PDI...dead stop.
PDI is a requirement for all Toyotas and they often skip a lot of it,
but if dealer balks, go after Toyota corporate they'll 107% make it right
and replace it.
