First off, I really enjoy this truck overall, but I absolutely hate the gear hunting/transmission slipping/clutch riding feeling I get in 2nd gear.

This generally occurs when I am accelerating from a slow roll (less than 10mph) it feels as though it takes forever to engage 2nd gear regardless of light or heavy gas. The truck sounds like a manual trans. vehicle riding the hell out of the clutch until it finally grabs the gear.
I'm wondering if this was some type of 'fix' to the clunky 1st>2nd shifts on 2025 models.

Anyone else have this problem? I've got about 1200 miles on it so far..

I have 600 miles on an SR5 and don't really have that anymore. I did have that a bit during the first 200ish miles or so, but it has mostly dissipated at this point.

It does still kind of hunts when engine braking/downshifting, but it's not that bad and I think it's normal

mine settled down after 3000 or so miles. it learned
how I like to drive and sorted itself out. now I feel
like this SR5 has the best slushbox automatic I've used

(best transmission overall is toyota hybrid synergy drive, which 4runner ain't got)

Good to hear that it eventually corrected itself after a while for you guys, I think the exhaust that this model comes with makes the gear hunting exponentially worse as it's moaning and groaning while doing a whole lot of nothing :ROFLMAO:

That's pretty normal. I'm at 10K and I still get that randomly. An OTT and custom tuned from Cam should be able to sort that out for the most part.

just know if you lose electrical power, all that learning goes out the window along with other settings like radio and stuff. think most of the computers run off the 12v and not the hybrid battery

I’m heavily modified and tuned, and I still get some of that. If I’m not mistaken, we’re feeling “clunky“ in 1 and 2, almost like granny gears. It takes off in third, but you have to give it the throttle unless you are in traffic. First thing in the AM, I am rolling really slow for the first half mile. I’m changing my transmission fluid at 20,000 miles next weekend. I’ll try to remember to come back to this thread to let you know if it helps.

1000 miles on my '26 pro. I feel a minor bump going from 1 to 2 when i first start driving but usually never after that. I'd say it was more in the first couple hundred miles but definitely learned since then and getting better. Such a beast of a truck though. Loving every second

Around 8500 miles now and it still clunks between 1st and 2nd. Particularly noticeable when first starting out and cold but seems to be not as noticeable once it’s warmed up.

If you’re interested, the OTT tune smooths it all out and adds a ton of performance. Well worth it.

OTT is a tuning company with a significant amount of experience tuning Toyotas.

From their website:

Custom ECU & Transmission Tuning for Toyota and Lexus vehicles — built to make your truck drive the way it should have from the factory.

âś” Eliminate gear hunting
âś” Sharper throttle response
âś” Smoother, smarter shifting
âś” Increased power and torque

That is normal for the new 8-speed transmission. The computer learns your driving style during the first few thousand miles. It tries to smooth out the shift from first to second gear.

A heck of a lot better than the old 6th gen 5 spd auto. But if you haven't yet had the opportunity go drive a PDK equipped Porsche to experience how far the 'slush box' has evolved.
