I have the 265/70 17 Michelin tires on my 4runner. I read you can't put snow chains on. That makes my 4runner trd off road premium completely useless in the winter! Unless I buy different tires and wheels? WTF?

Okay, you can or cannot. What do Toyota say?

If not, what is the reason, clearance from bits in the wheel well?

Can you put chains on the 245-70-17 stock SR5?

Chains are not officially approved for 265/70R17 because of potential clearance variation, but Class S cables on the rear wheels are should be fine as long as the tire is not an unusually wide/shouldered A/T.

TLDR: Toyota can't say they are good b/c they aren't testing and approving every fitment under the sun.

it's just Toyota stating there is very little clearance

if you do it right and know how to install appropriate
traction enhancement such as chains and not cause
damage, it's fine.

from the manual

Driving with tire chains (vehicles without 265/70R18 tires)
Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of accidents. Failure to do so may result in the vehicle being unable to be driven safely, and may cause death or serious injury.

●Do not drive in excess of the speed limit specified for the tire chains being used, or 30 mph (50 km/h), whichever is lower.
●Avoid driving on bumpy road surfaces or over potholes.
●Avoid sudden acceleration, abrupt steering, sudden braking and shifting operations that cause sudden engine braking.
●Slow down sufficiently before entering a curve to ensure that vehicle control is maintained.
●Do not use LTA (Lane Tracing Assist) system.

toyota also had a tsb on 17in wheels for mud caking on the inside of the wheels and causing issues when off roading

SCC Auto tightening chains fit just fine, I tested a new pair yesterday to make sure they fit. It’s close, and I’d only ever want to do it in an emergency, but it‘s doable. If you drive a lot in winter it’s HIGHLY advisable to just get some proper winter tires like Blizzaks anyway, huge difference in traction and with traction assist functions on the ORP you’ll be laughing at the idea of getting stuck in the snow.

If you're part of the country allows it get a set of winter tires that are studded. Makes a huge difference on ice.

Went to my trusted tire shop a few weeks ago after reading about tire chains in the manual. Test fitted this set and bought them. Here they are this morning in my driveway. Crawled around and under again. No clearance issues with these that I can see. The heavy cross bar chains that I use on my 3/4 ton truck would never work though due to clearance issues. These are on the stock 265 70R18 Falkins. Ride is a bit dirty. First nice day in a while.

First, my tire size is 265/70R18 tires not 17". Talked to my local dealership they said new wheels and tires was the best bet. I bought a 70,000 beast, it shouldn't be limited to no snow. I visit my cabin 2 to 4 times in the winter. Can't with my beast. Dont have room for a second set of wheels and tires.
Any suggestions for what I could use would be appreciated!!
How about cable chains, as long as I just do snow and no rough 4 wheeling.
I saw that last post for chains....looks good?

I need chains for the same reason you do. A remote cabin down 3/4 of a mile of sometimes unplowed forest road with deep snow. I have had my 3/4 ton truck stuck on it with all four chained up. My real problem is a hill which is sometimes icy. When it gets like that I need chains to get out even when I have plowed. Do what I did and take your 4Runner to a tire shop and test fit chains. A good shop will do that for you. They looked good at the shop so I tried them on at home and checked a bit more closely. I don't envision ever having to use them on paved roads, just this short section of road and I think what I posted will work. But only on the rear tires. If you are in CA try Les Schwab. They will take care of you.

One pair on the rear wheels only or two pairs with those chains on all four wheels?

Plenty of people where I live run their winter tires year round to avoid having to switch or store an extra set of wheels.
