Does anyone have a suggestion for running boards that drop a little below the frame of the 4 runner but not as drastically as the Predator steps? My wife needs a step but I want to preserve as much clearance as possible for beach driving. I think the running boards that are designed to avoid clearance loss may not be low enough to be helpful to her.

I suspect there are decent after-market choices but I like the boards that came on my ORP - which will be coming off to install rock sliders very soon (so will be available for sale). See photo.

The other OEM choices are shown in 4Runner accessories. Of these, I like the cast aluminum ones with texture but the Oval Tube steps might sit a bit lower (have not seen them in person so this is conjecture).

I have Toyota Predator Steps. But I plan to move to rock sliders. Gonna be CBI Off-road or Westcott Designs. Dunno which yet!

I've been happy with the stock ORP running board, low enough for my wife to easily use but high enough I'm not worried about snagging them on anything when off-roading. Bonus points for how they help with rock strikes on the side of the truck when on forest roads.

Agreed! I'm a big fan of the stock fixed boards both functionally and as protection from door dings and rock flings. But if you're looking for your steps/rails to actually perform as armor you'd need something else.

These are exactly what she needs as I got them for my wife and she sings their praises everytime she gets in the 4 Runner...but they probably lower than you want.

Are these the ones @MikeD talking about?

I like them ans have been thinking about getting a set. Any one has experience with these running boards?
Those eBay boards look VERY close to my TRD OR Premium running boards (including shape of brackets, etc.) but the tread design looks slightly different so I think they are knock-offs. Doesn't mean they wouldn't work but I think there is some risk. If that is what you are looking for you should consider finding someone's take-offs - the member classifieds on this forum have had them show up a lot (and mine will show up as soon as my sliders get installed - soon I hope).

For the OP, I think the post above shows a good photo of the Toyota Tube running boards that I referenced in 4Runner accessories . These SEEM like they satisfy the goal of "drop(ing) a little below the frame":

Thanks! I agree that out of all the options I've see so far this is the closest to what I think might work. We have our 5000 mile maintenance scheduled for Saturday and hope they have these on one of the showroom models to look at in person. Thanks to all who have replied!
