Anyone turn off the data transmission to their 4Runner? I’m trying to get a better understanding of what features will be lost if I turn it off. I never signed up for the My Connect app and began turning the data to the vehicle off via the SOS button, but they said I’d lose my remote start if I continued .. Can anyone confirm?

Yes you lose remote start, and driver profile support too. I haven’t missed either personally.

I've got it turned off. Digital key, some of the mileage metrics, driver profiles, remote start.

You do get a periodic annoying nag screen about enabling it.

You also (apparently) lose over the air updates, but since we haven't had one yet, I can't confirm. Worst case the dealer can do the update for you from what I understand.

I'd much rather lose those than have Toyota gathering data about everything I do and everywhere I go.

I don't need to be digitally violated. Keep your remote start
At least give me a cut of the $ if you're going to sell my data

There's other things to turn off/go into toyota/dealers website and fill out "do not share/sell my data". You have 30 or 60 days

lol trust me, apple and google are making a killing off selling your data from your cellphone. and dont get started on all the apps that are capturing data also. the only way to not be tracked or whatever, is not to have a digital presence period (which is near impossible in todays day and age where everyting is digital). and dont get started on the credit cards, websites for pets, banks, loans, tax services, etc. you cant get away from it in todays age. so toyota doing its part is just a small part of the whole pot.

and yes apple makes money off you plebs, just differently than google does (cough default search engine on apple cough)

which happens to be google. google is paying apple 18-20 billion to be the default search engine for apple.

and although apple says they dont sell your user data, they do profit from it internally from its growing ad businesses (its a small distinction but its the same principal)

it all comes down to each peson's level of risk. some see it as convience vs risk.

some want to die on that wall some dont care, its a mute point in the grand scheme of things.

in 20-30 yrs it wont matter to me, i will be dead from old age, life is already to short and i wasted it on the wrong stuff when i was younger.

worrying about the little things, just doesnt matter to me as much as some folks.

/rant :)

i digress ...

Long story short, many idioms (and other words/phrases) have a long history that sometimes gets misunderstood or misinterpreted over time. So while there is usually a clear origin for a phrase, sometimes a different phrase actually comes into fashion alongside the original, or even supersedes the original in popularity/common use. Often, especially when the two phrases are pronounced similarly, they are effectively different ways of saying the same thing. So in this case, the original phrase was “moot point”, but because “mute point” is pronounced similarly and used in the same context, you could consider it a variation on the original with the same meaning.

This kind of thing happens all the time, especially when the origin becomes obscured through time and isn’t obvious to the average casual speaker. The word “moot” isn’t terribly common any more (and mostly exists in stock phrases like “moot court”), so it makes sense that speakers might not think to use it in this context compared to the relatively more common “mute”.
The word "moot" itself has been subject to another change through misunderstanding: the original meaning is "debatable", but now it often means the opposite, that is, "settled" (as in "the point is moot").
:ROFLMAO:

You lose remote start via the app but you can still start it remotely using the key fob regardless of whether or not you have connected services.
Here's a video on how to do it:

I thought more or less the same at one point, but as another poster mentioned if you carry a smart phone around, you're already being tracked and your habits examined/sold in far greater detail than you probably realize.

While I don't know this for certain, my suspicion is that Toyota cares far less about tracking you and what your habits are than Apple of Google does and probably uses your data in a more global fashion, meaning they are looking at your vehicle usage/vehicle type for either marketing purposes or vehicle diagnostics for their R&D Department.

Honestly, there is also this cold hard truth. None of us have lives that are interesting enough for these companies to look in anything other than a global fashion ( except for Meta/Apple/Google)

ETA:
Just as an example of how good/weird/creepy smartphone tracking is, I was up in Manhattan one day and was standing at a crosswalk waiting to cross the street. On a nearby light pole, there was a flyer for some rap artist. I didn't really think anything of it, but for one reason or another it made an impression on me, maybe because of the artwork. Later that night on the train ride home I open up FB and one of the first posts or ads I saw was for that same artist that was on the flyer I saw earlier. I don't follow that type of music at all, dont have friends that do and there was no reason for it to be on my FB feed.

I doubt it was a coincidence and can only speculate there was some kind of tracking associated with the placement of those flyers, meaning their placement in the city wasn't entirely random, and that their locations were mapped out and put into a database of some type that allowed the locations of smart phone carriers to be mapped to the placement of the flyers which than triggered an ad for the artist to appear on their Facebook feed.

yeah i had a big rant on this before. its a matter of risk (inconvenience) vs convenience

there is so much tracking you, its not even funny anymore. credit cards, loans, credit ratings, bank transactions, swiping your credit card to purchase stuff.

unless you are using cash for everything, those transactions are tracking you better than what toyota is tracking on you.

I don’t use google for anything, because their whole business model is selling user data. Ditto facebook, and other social media. Apple may use it internally, but they don’t sell it. Least worst alternative.

There is zero benefit to the connected services that’s worth letting Toyota sell your driving data to your insurance company IMHO. Others may disagree, which is fine. I’m grateful that Toyota does let us opt out (Though I do wish they’d *stop* nagging) every few days on the screen.

This, btw, is why GM won’t implement CarPlay anymore. They want to monetize all that driving and location data. It’s certainly not about a good UX (because none of the car companies, Toyota included, have a decent car UX.

All very well-said points about data sharing. Yes, it is rampant. Is it a big deal? Well, that is a personal decision. My take is that, as another said here, we are not important enough for big companies to care about our specific data. Usually data is shared anonymously (although not necessarily as anonymously as we might like; it is often possible to track data to a specific person if one really wants to). Personally I am not too concerned with big companies sharing general data. Even ones like Facebook--but I also never post anything that would harm my if it was shared (if you do not want someone to see it, don't post it!). Here is a statement that drives this all home and good to remember, however you choose to act on it or how much you choose to be concerned:

"Every for-profit business has a product they sell/make money off of. If their service is free, then that product is you."

might want to caveat that, tv's now a days are really cheap vs a few years for the same model. reason is to get you to buy a $400 55in tv vs the $800 55in tv. why is it so cheap?

they track your viewing habits and what not. thats where they make the profit. it no longer about being free, but cheap enough to entice you from the brands that dont track you with higher cost tv's.

its really rampant within the last year.

and there is no way to get around some of these tracking tv's. they simply wont work or are a major pita to use without internet connectivity.

pi-hole logs on my network shows just how much it blocks all the MS and samsung tracking trying to get out of my network
